Im thinking of becomeing a canal sailor! I found a fishing boat with a seized 60hp ford diesel! its perfect with stay sail and sail!!

Weve been looking at it and im think its great. At least the consept as we talk about the canals weve got to Belgium and Germany!! No one has any idea what the canals are like today!!2007!!!(time flys)

What are the canals like to travel in Belgium Holland and German Germanys the least known! Other than the Rhine! Has anyone ever been on another canal other than the Rhine in Germany????????????

Is Italian wine stronger than French?? Or is it the way its served??Is French wine better than Italian??Italians is very good is it Bio as French is???(were trying but my wine is from the bilge!!But just as good??as--

Have only cycled along Belgian canals, but we have a MOBO friend who is semi liveaboard and loves it. There was also an article last month in PBO which made us want to try, but when, which boat? So little time, so little money? As for the wine, stay away from Belgian - yes some is still produced, you know wot the Romans were like.... I came, I saw, I conquered, I planted some vines, and if they didn't take, I went home.

if you go to Germany, try the river Mosel - not a canal, but wonderful landscape and great wine! Drop me a line if you pass Trier...

The river Mosel is navigable ffor more then 250 km - you can enter from various points of the french canal system (close to Nancy, Metz) and it flows past Trier and into the Rhine at Koblenz - it has locks and barges up to 200m are used on it, but it is not too busy. You can find a map of the german navigable rivers and canals at http://www.elwis.de/Binnenwasserstrassen/karte_bwstr/index.html

Then i want to zoom through Deutchland to Poland the land of milk and honey!! There id like to slow down and enjoy!! I hope??

The mosel is almost not flowing at all in summer (having locks), but can be quite fast in winter - though nothing to be compared with the rhine. In summer I sail an engine-less dinghy on it without worries. However, it is not exactly en-route from Holland to Poland, though it is worth a detour.

I cant see anyway to get to Poland without going on the Rhine?? Is there a route anywhere? From Holland Belgium or France?? The Mosel dose sound nice. What about places to stay? Can you just tie up or must i go into a paid or designated area??

The Mosel has small club marinas every few kilometers, with welcoming clubs. In Trier for example there is www.yachthafen-trier.de . Additionally, in every section of the river is a small protection harbor (for the commercial ships in winter), where you can normally tie up for a day without anybody bothering, though it is not official.

You can go down the Rhine from Koblenz to dusseldorf in a day ,you have about 4 to 5 knots behind you .then Mitteland canal (fairly boring but quick ) difficult to get fuel stations to sell less than a thousand litres.I have been down elbe seiten canal and on to lubeck.,lubeck end was nice.
