Thank you for the suggestion- but as my boyfreind will be on holiday in Australia at the time, AND it will be my birthday, I thought I'd treat myself to a bit of sun: so Gibraltar looks good (I want tidal). Unless you have a better idea??
We did our Day Skipper course at Straits Sailing, Gibraltar. It was 6 years ago and at that time a one boat outfit and Colin the principal took the course. Colin also writes the best book on tides etc for that area. They advertise at the back of the magazines. We were completely inexperienced in big boat sailing at the time and learnt a lot but nothing prepared us for berthing downtide in the Hamble with the tide going with us. While Gibraltar is tidal you can only learn to ferry glide a boat into a berth where the tide is a lot stronger. I would not hesitate recommending them though. One big big advantage is the weather. While I later wanted heavy weather experience as a starter course the other half enjoyed it and it was more like a holiday. I think many people are put off (sometimes for life) by starting in the Solent with bad weather especially those that are being encouraged to do the course by the other half. Its not on many short course you can say you sailed to Africa!!
