I'll try washing and softening my halyards before trying any more splices as I nearly pulled the side of the shed last time when milking the cover back over splice.That's what I read too, then I tried it. I washed the last 2m of the rope in hot water, final rinse in fabric conditioner, and let it dry. No real difference from new rope.
I take the point about getting closer to the sheave though, although that's a big knot!![]()
