Name: Venture
LOD: 21ft.
LOA: 25ft (with short bowsprit and bumpkin)
Draft: 3ft 6in

Can you identify her, or offer any hints on possible date, builder or architect.

She is 21ft, now cutter rigged sloop with wooden mast and boom, but was possibly originally gaff rigged.

She is pitch pine on oak frames with mahogany and teak superstructure.

She is very full underwater with long keel and transom hung rudder.

She was based in Poole around 1960 and has a no: 7 on the mainsail, but no other identifying marks.

Her name is Venture, but this could have been changed pre 1960.

Photo can be seen here;

She looks remarkably similar to a Johnson & Jago two & a half tonner I once had,
I think they were known as Rayfarer class. But they were only 18ft. [exc bowsprit]. Perhaps a stretched version?
Very pretty boat anyway.

Hi Dan

Thanks for the feedback. I have added a couple more pixs that might make identification a little easier.

There has been some speculation that it is an Essex design. If it was Johhson & Jago, when would a likely build date be. I have not seen any history on the yard before the second world war.

Also did they build to their own designs.

Hi
I'm not saying that your boat is a Johnson, but it looks very similar.
I have a copy of a page from Yachting Monthly Feb 1934 giving details of the 2.5 tonner. Designed by R E Freeman. I understand that many yards in those days would adapt designs to owners requests or to suit the timber they had in stock.
Johnson & Jago later merged with Shuttlewoods of Paglesham & produced the Neptune motor sailers.
If you PM me your address I'll post you a copy of the YM article if it helps.

Hi Dan

Thanks for the input. If you can post a copy of the 1934 YM that would be great.

I was wondering if Maurice Griffiths ever did something similar, or was he designing later.

Do you know of any other R F Freeman designs still afloat of similar size.

I just found this by searching on google for Johnson & Jago.

Boats for Sale - johnson boats for sale
JOHNSON Johnson & Jago 4 Ton RF Freeman design,
3.42 Tons, 2 berths, diesel Year :1935 Power :21 Length
www.boatsforsale-europe.com/S-any-type/johnson.htm

But when I tried the link it did not turn up.

Anyway certainly looks helpful. Now just need some help tracking down a J&J 4 Tonner to see if it matches. Any ideas.

Hi you definatly have a very beautifull boat there,
It looks very similar too mine,
Except yours seems to be in much of its original shape
Giselle has had the original cabin replaced by a very large gunnel to gunnel job,
but luckily her original registration has been handed down by all owners.
She was built by W Lee & Sons Strangsound Peterbourough, 1952( I've asked here before and dont think they still exist)
She is 26' Honduras Mahogany planks on grown oak frames and looks of a very simillar line has a long cast keel, the rudder is hung from the raked transom as yours is and draws about 4'6" her mast is set in a tabernacle ( on deck, not through) and the bunks, chart table and fit out below decks are in english oak of a very high grade, tiller steered and also has a wheel in the cabin.
dont know if this will help you any to find out who built your boat, but i have spent the last year looking for a yacht the same as mine on the net and yours is pretty well the closest i've found, I'd love too see some more photos if you have any as the few i've had access to of mine before her alterations are quite distant and poor
and i'm trying too re deck and cabin as close too the original
if you wish i can e-mail you some photos of gisselle as she is on land undergoing a major restoration at the moment, but mabe enough bits will match up to help you
Regards
Scott
