Mrs S spoke those immortal word last night. "Perhaps we should look at a Fly bridge boat".

Not wishing to seem churlish I got out all the Princess and Fairline stuff I had and whenever I look at 44 ft plus FB boats I think that I will miss the fun of our V40.

What are the pros and cons and what would you suggest as the best say two/three year old Flybridge at around 45 to 48 feet? oh yes must have three cabins for me and Mrs S, and the bairns (4 boys, two boys in each).

Never use the inside helm always on the flybridge. Even when its cold and raining. It's nice to have the option though. Latest Brooms etc the inside helm is a very expensive option. As for fun, Steeple chasing the waves and sexy power turns are much more exciting from up top. When on the river you can see into peoples gardens alot easier from up top. If thats what you want to do.
Biggest advantage of the lot is that you always get to look down on the yachties.

If you've got 4 kids, perhaps its time you stopped 'having fun'. Must have been a bit tight in the V40 though!
2/3 yr old F/b cruiser. Have a look at the Princess 440/460 or 470/480 (may be a bit big) or Fairline Squaddie 43 (some had 3 cabins but a bit cramped) or 47. If you fancy an aft cabin look at the Sealine 450/T46

It\'s warmer in a wheelhouse!

As a west country "yottie" I resent your comments about looking down on us. As owner also of a 120 ton Dutch barge I look forward to the pleasure of using you as a fender next time we are on the river! Then we'll see who looks down on who!

Ohh Bargee thats a bit nasty. When the flybridge is 9 or 10 foot (and more) above water line ChrisP has little choice but to look down on other water users. I'd love a Flybridge cruiser but short person would be a problem until he can do the steps on his own.

Never found a yachtie yet that didnt want to use me as the most expensive fender in the marina. Always found the best course of action is to invite them alongside. That way I can ensure that they will miss me and plough into the boat on the trot in front.
Don't worry about damaging me though because by the time you've decided what you're going to do, got the crew to understand and played with the flappy things. We will have finished dinner, washed up, read the paper and be half way home.
Stiil on the bright side at least you know what a fender is and have an idea what it's used for unlike most of the rest of your fraternity.

Merry Xmas. :)

Re: Barry to the rescue

Thanks for the support Barry. Pauline some times thinks I need a little help when it comes to the caustic posting. Drop by for a beer some time.

Merry Christmas

Nobody should feel the need to look down on anybody. After years of English attitudes I went boating in Holland in the early eighties, and have spent a lot of time there since, work and play. My first trip took me through the Kaagerplassen near Schiphol, and I could not believe the variety of boats there: everything from windsurfers and dinghies through yachts, motor cruisers, ski boats, converted sailing and motor barges and of course 1000 ton commercial motor barges. And what I learnt about Holland in the ensuing years was that everybody is friendly to others, everybody respects everybody else's choice of boat, everybody waves in friendly fashion (even the better water skiers!) and I have never picked up any hint of anybody "looking down" on others. In short they all co-exist, commercial and pleasure, and there is no hint that any one "type" feels they have more right to the water than others. What a shame the English can't be like that. Why should the fact that you prefer to have a flybridge sports cruiser on the river make you any better than a yottie, or a narrow boater, or for that matter a boat hirer? Reasons please?

I have to disagree with you there. We were in Holland this summer and motorboat/yottie feud was alive and kicking. We were talking to a dutch couple while waiting for a lock, discussing this situation and he said, "It's simple. We hate them and they hate us" We watched in amazement as the motorboaters formed a barricade to let fellow motorboaters into the lock before any yotties - it was completely bizarre.

We didn't find the sailing fraternity in Holland very friendly or at all tolerant.

I presume English is not your first language. In the context above "Look Down" is a physical statement. If I'm 10 foot above you I no choice but to look down on you as you are lower. Not I look down on you because your are snivelling pathetic water user who doesn't have a boat like mine. Or at least that is how I read it.

BTW, IMHO - It's the raggies who don't wave on the Solent. Have cruised past (20+m distance) a number of families all dressed up in their pretty red oilskins hanging on to the cockpit side for dear life. Gosh it looks so much fun. I guess they would wave but they are all hanging on for dear life <G>

I may be a girlie, but I'm not blonde and definitely not dumb. Your question was the equivalent of a woman's car breaking down and the first 'helpful' male that comes along says 'Did you put petrol in it darlin' " - Course they weren't bloody German, they were Dutch. I can tell the difference.

Huh - men!!!! ;-)

I fear you have grasped the wrong end of the proverbial stick. When he said 'look down on' it was in the context of height.

Dear mrs. B,

Don't be touchy: just a quip on the lines of towels on deck chairs. You have dented my illusions about the Dutch however. I have never encountered attitudes such as you suggest, excepting a general dislike of anything German except German money. Perhaps you were in the wrong place at the wrong time because your experience is certainly not mine over the last twenty years.

P.S. I've answered your question about perm lotion btw.
