Come on - we all have visited a place to only wish we had NEVER heard of it and probably got 'locked'in or stuck by tide ....

So what was so bad about the place ?

Good info for others ...... !!! and could make for some interesting story's !!!!

A candidate.

Margate. Thirty years ago. It might have changed, but it was a dump and it stank at low tide. Only there because I had bust the rudder. Never been back; will never go back.

Dover used to be a dump, but it is positively yacht-friendly, now. Brightlingsea is also no longer a dump.

The whole of Devon in the last two weeks of July this year!

Sorry Devon, you're normally beautiful. It's just that this time it rained every single day! In the end we came home early.

Weymouth if you end up spending more than a night there, we did and I went mad! - spending 4 days stuck there with the entire kiss me quick population there on holiday + it being Weymouth Pop Idol week in the local boozer.

I am not in a hurry to return.

Salcombe was more over the top this summer than I have ever seen before with well known charter firms causing havoc in the middle of the night, the pubs average customer age is 14, waiting to long to get food, little kids driving ribs and other highly powered craft around the place like a Star Wars battle, all to much for me!

Still Whitby for me I am afraid. lovely town but facilities in so called marina still a farce. Urinals still leaking onto shower area floor. It was doing this when I first visited in 2000, shower still filthy and communal still have to raft up 3, 4 and even 5 deep on anything but wet w/end in December. 2 yes "2" visitors berths Stopped off this summer to see if any improvement, Dad complained to chap on duty as drain in showers blocked with hair and filth. reply was "I know but its not my job to clean it" Bloody scandalous and still dearer than almost anywhere else on this stretch of coast. A large ex Dutch sailing barge used for charter came in stopped one night and apparently left without paying citing the disgusting facilities that his charterers were forced to use. Not that Scarborogh borough council will give a damn. Cheers Mike.

Port Edgar (Edinburgh)

Charged me a multihull surcharge despite lying alongside, showers freezing & stank like a s***house, miles from anywhere. right rip-off.

Unfortunately the new place (Dolphin Haven) is so small and cramped that it fills up on any weekend in Summer so you end up on the Town Quay where:
- you get rafted inside of half a dozen boats
- there is plenty of wash
- idiots walk over your boat with no courtesy or respect
- the quay didn't (doesn't?) have eye bolts or rings at a suitable height for yachts
- there is a complete lack of privacy or peace until the last of the drunks have gone home about 2am on Sunday morning

andyou pay an extortionate price for all this! And HM thinks this is acceptable.

Isn\'t it about time that something was done ?

MDL may have caused people to create Berthing Associations, whatever ..... they are a good thing.

Now we have various marinas / harbours coming in for stick. Maybe its time to think about a more generalised 'stick' that can be waved around ? OK there's RYA etc. but they are stuck into all sorts like Eurocracy etc.

We can all say - boycott shabby places .... trouble is good and even bad places get a fair share of boats in and the cycle doesn't get broken - as generally around the south anyway - you are crammed in !!!! People want to walk on walk off .....

So what to do ? Any suggestions ???????

A name and shame score board anyone ? Posted by the Mags ?

Can\'t think of one

Nope. Not a boaty one at least.

Worst non-boaty was without doubt Mexico City and Queratera about an hours flight away.

One day when the world gets old - that's where it will get haemoroids.

I have a theory that people who loved the old Poole town quay only ever visited it on a weekend, and not while the gravel loading cranes were in operation morning till evening every weekday on the quay opposite. It drove us up the wall, but it was cheaper.

There's only one place I swore I'd never go back to and I managed to keep that promise - Poole Town Quay. I've heard about the new marina and I'll probably never go there either. I'll stick to Studland.

Gallions Reach Marina in the Thames beats Bradwell by a mile for awfulness. Horribly creepy place with overhang of violence just below the surface, terrifying walk to shops or tube if you meet anyone - and it is right underneath the London City Airport flightpath, and very close to the runway. Truly disgusting facilities! Hack on up to to Limehouse, South Quay or St K.
