I'm about to buy a drogue for keeping the boat under control in big following seas and when being towed. I've got a feeling that someone posted a link an MCA(?) sight where recommended sizes for length/displacement of craft were shown. Can someone refresh my memory?

TIA

Drogue or sea anchor? I've done lots of towing with a drogue around 12" dia at the mouth. It's a long tapered thing rather like a wind sock you'd see at an airfiled and seems to do OK even for boats over 45'. This is in the solent though possibly consider a bit bigger for open sea but 48" sound too big.

On the other hand if you're after a sea anchor for then these things can get really big.

Jim, the cost is about $200 according to one US web site.

Woosle, the size looks big and this is because the drogue is not a cone but more like a flat bishop's mitre with a large hole on the top. The idea is that the device provides a given amount of drag but does not collapse as conical ones can do according to the literature. I know of other people that have used a mini tyre to similar effect but where the hell do you store a mini tyre when it's not in use?
