Can I use true vegetable fuel and not pay Tax.

Quite a few manufactuers will warrant the engines / fuel systems for more than 5% biodiesel. Peugeot, for example will allow up to 30% currently. The only stipulations is that it conforms to European Standard EN 590:2002. It may contain up to 5% (V/V) of Fatty Acid Methyl Esters complying with EN
14214, (Automotive fuels (FAME) for diesel engines - Requirements and test methods). The 5% biodiesel mentioned is the bare minimum that a manufacturer must allow to be used because (as has been said) much of the DERV available in the EC already has up to 5% added.

Saw a motoring TV program recently. They took an old Mercedes 250 diesel, filled it up directly with old chip oil from chippy and drove it from west to east coast of UK, stopping once at a chinese restaurant for a pre-arranged fuel stop. Car went fine, no power loss and no break downs.

Not so easy to do on the more modern diesels though. Unbelieveably fine tolerances in the injection pumps and they really are very sensitive to fuel quality. Some of the major manufacturers are finding that out the hard way in China and going back to their older technology to avoid getting a lousy reputation over there.
