that is on the bottom of the boat, on the sterndrive and trim tabs? Everyone seems to have very prettily contrasting colours between hull and outdrives-is it necessary? Or just fashionable :-) ?

Shouldn't use a copper based antifoul on aluminium drives. It can cause galvanic corrosion of the drives.

Check the tin, it will say if it is suitable for use on Aluminium.

You need specific aluminium antifoul paint for sterndrives and aluninium trim tabs.
The dire warning above about corrosion, should be taken very seriously.

Trilux is ok on hull and outdrives, and comes in three colours I think.
I guess the reason for using Blakes or Trilux aerosol is that its thinner than building up a layer each year of Trilux antifoul . Cant say I noticed any difference between the two sprays, both seemed as ineffectual as each other against barnacles !

Everyone is right here - and remember to leave a 1" gap on the hull all around the outdrives so your bottom paint (which are all copper rich) is not in contact with the sterndrives at all. A width of standard making tape is just right.

It is also said that you should not use any wire brush with steel bristles to remove old fouling/barnycules/weed etc from outdrive or shield.
Whatever happpened to that rumoured plastic-composite leg from Volvo ??????
