Can I use a \"!\" (Exclamation Mark!) in a boat name (part 1 reg)?

Easy answer is phone them up....but 'tis saturday /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Can I use a "!" (Exclamation Mark!) in a boat name (part 1 / blue book (laminated paper /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif) Registered)?

Boat has already been renamed (as far as I am concerned /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif) - just need to do the paperwork /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif and stick the name on the stern. and think up and then have the ceremony - all minor details. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

But had the sudden thought that an Exclamation mark at the end of the name might look good (not 100% on this myself, and I expect opinions will vary!).

Been racking my 1 brain cell and can't remember seeing any boats with a ! in the name....of course not really looked......but it occurs to me thata ! might be difficult to spell over the VHF, so maybe a no no at the Registry?

The name might well be misread with ! interpreted as I and cause confusion on VHF or with the coastguard. I think names should be shortish, easily pronounced and understood and phonetically easy to recite. Maybe I'm just boring - don't like mangled car reg plates either.

Agree with MoodySabre.
If the name is a really good one it won't need an exclamation mark anyway.

If you called your boat Gordon Brown, everyone would add an exclamation mark in their head anyway.

Re: Can I use a \"!\" (Exclamation Mark!) in a boat name (part 1 reg)?

So what's the supposed name then?

Re: Can I use a \"!\" (Exclamation Mark!) in a boat name (part 1 reg)?

If it were me, I'd register it without the exclamation mark, but just put the name on the boat with it at the end - I don't think that's illegal?

We had a De Beers diamond dredger in port which had an upside down "!" in the name. It represents one of those African click sounds apparently.

To avoid our total confusion the click sound was not used in our spellings and the click was made silent.

I agree with a previous poster, keep the name simple and understandable, for when an emergency happens you don't want to be wasting time spelling out the boat name.

I've heard of a dinghy called isdoo

(read it upside down)

That's cool /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Was the mother ship called "Daisy"? /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

An upside down ! mmmmm interesting - did think about putting the exclamation mark in brackets (!) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.....but having slept on the idea, I am cooling to the !

But still a bit too chew on , cheers folks

Our name has a ? at the end of it, and I included this when applying for part 3 registration online. When the SSR certificate eventually came back (it took a month) they had ignored the ?. So at a guess I would expect them to ignore your ! as well.

Cheers

In my trade (writing) an exclamation mark is known as a dog's cock. Not sure you'd want one of those in your boat name. (Wish YM would stop scattering so many dogs' cocks through its pages).

Well known racing & rigging chap round these parts (Big Nige) had one with several !'s in the name (CRIKEY!!!). Don't know if she was Part 1 registered, though.

You could put a heart with an arrow through after your boat name if you wish, but you can't register it as part of the name.
When the coastguard ask for the boat name I take it that you won't say "gordon brown exclamation mark".
I can imagine the response -
"Please spell boat name"
