There are various different engines available for boats.

What engines do you have , size of boat, is it underpowered with that type and what problems have you had with it.?

The reason is I am not great on engines types so please keep answers in easy language or explain self please.

I am asked what goes wrong with engines , or what is the commonest problems.

Thames - non tidal

Got a little 24 foot Fairline Holiday - re-engined it a couple of years ago after frost killed my V6 petrol engine. Poped /forums/images/icons/wink.gif in a VP AD31P - 150 hp so that the boat retainied its original desing speed - or close to it.

Very, very pleased with the refit, MMS did a graet job and under budget and at 30 odd pence per litre she burns about 1 litre of diesel per hour compared with 1 gallon of petrol per hour at prices nearing 5 quid a gal.

Took her to the tidal Thames this year and she few past the barrier and out to Gallions point, also coped well with wind over tide, even if the wife didn't /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Can't beat a diesel in my opinion.

Peter

Hmmm. Loads of factors

Lots of people, especially dealers of course, say buy the biggest engines, helps at resale. So most boats these days do seem to be bopught with the biggest or second biggest

Where you use the boat matters. Eg Caterpillars are often chosen for boats in less developed places like Caribee.

Pricing seems wild sometimes. On our boat, the price difference between Volvo and Cat or MAN for nearly the same hp is literally £50k. You would have to be pretty mad not to buy the Volvo. I guess the prices are a bit rigged by Fairline, I mean they dont want you to order anything but the Volvo

Some makes are better/worse at different hp. The Cat 660s are very noisy for example, whereas the Volvo D12 675 is whisper quiet

I have a Birchwood 37 with twin Volvo TAMD40B diesels rated at 165hp each. In my opinion the twin 200hp are a better installation for this size of vessel. My boat will still push along at top speed of 20 knots, but thats with a clean bottom and flat calm waters! Its far better at its cruising speed of around 15 knots. She burns 6 gallons a hour per engine.

In my many years of boating I think the most common problem is a lack of service and dirty fuel, unchanged fuel filters etc. Particularly boaters who spend most of their time on non tidal river and then take the boat once a year out to sea! dirty fuel is stirred up and blocks filters and then they lose an engine or two!

I thought I'd join the low power thread! 2 x Gardner 5LW at £72 hp each, 'bout 2.5 gallons per hour.

Ah! Proper engines!!! I would still love two 6LX Gardners in Englander, would love to rebuild them myself aswell, then be able to polish or chrome all the copper bits! Lovely reliable engines! No way now I´m afraid.

Italian built, 45 foot form the early 80's.... 2x 325 HP, straight six, two-stroke, 6.9L Detroit Diesel.

Great "little" engines, unstressed and smooth. Alison gearboxes and very smooth Idle @ 550 RPM.

Currently Max out @ 24 Knot .... but hull could easily handle 30 ... so considering changing injectors etc., to have them rated @ 385 or 410.

Issues... well none really, but then again, have not had the boat very long, so time will tell I guess.... Easy to get parts for the engines at least ....

AZ46

Azimut 46 - 2 x Caterpillar 3208TA 442hp engines. I've had good experience with these engines in my current and previous boats although I've heard that the 375hp versions of the same engine are longer lived. Had a problem with a failed alternator on one engine but nothing else
The AZ46 is a heavy boat especially when loaded with Med equipment such as a big gennie, aircon and passarelle so these engines will only push the AZ46 to a realistic maximum of 27-28knots clean or 24-25knots dirty which I consider to be just about acceptable. I see that Azimut are now offering the AZ46 with 505hp Cat C9 engines and I would think that 30knots is attainable with these engines

My 21ft sportscruiser has a 7 Volvo year old TAMD22 with an SX outdrive. This is a 105hp 2 litre turbo diesel that can get us up to 27Kn. Seems very reliable and I think is based on the engine that was used on the Austin Montego!

Later versions on this boat (Skibsplast 660) are now equiped with Mercuisers

Sealine S24, Volvo Penta KAD32 170hp diesel.

Performance is "ok", not exactly a rocketship. Just about 30knots flat out with a tailwind. 18-20 knots more realistic cruise.

Previous S240 (same boat) with a "lower" powered AD31XD 150hp was actually faster. But then, the older engine blew up a couple of times:
1.) Belts failed, causing pump to stop and an overheat.
2.) Cylinder head leak, plus injector sleeves corroded.
3.) Exhaust pipe corrosion.
Total repairs about £5000 over three years, so gave up and bought a new one.

OK - my starter for 10.

I have two 4.3L Volvo V6 petrols - converted to run on LPG & Petrol. They develop 205HP each, and as such, the boat is marginally overpowered by 65HP. The original motors were Volvo AQ171 rated at 170HP. The boat is a Windy 8800 (8.8mtrs / 28ft 10") and weighs 3.25 tonnes.

In my opinion, most of the problems with marine engines aren't derived from the engine itself, but from the marinisation peripherals that turn the basic engine (my engines are actually marinised General Motors V6's that they fit into SUV's in America) into something usable in a boat. Like water pumps, exhaust risers and systems, etc. Also, there is stuff like alternators and other electrical jiggery-pokery, that would never under normal design service see the amount of salty spray and corrosive atmosphere that these things have to put up with.

Of course, the other problem with marinised engines is the usage pattern. They get worked hard and then stored for weeks without use inside a damp salty box. You wouldn't dream of doing this to your car.
