Can anyone tell me what it\'s worth please?

We recently purchased a wheel-steered 33 footer with a very smart looking Sailomat 601 wind vane self-steering gear, fitted new in 2004. Whilst it has the wheel coupling parts, it can also be used with a tiller.

It hasn't been used in anger, and the boat hasn’t even been fitted with blocks for steering lines.

We don't do, and don't plan to do, the type of sailing that requires wind vane steering, and suspect that it could seriously help with the funding for the new genoa etc. we are buying.

(My only slight reservation about selling it is that it would appear to add significantly to one's "street cred" in a marina - the assumption seems to be that one is a "well hard" ocean voyager! On the other hand, when we remove it, we can refit the much more useful bathing ladder.)

Does anyone know what it might realistically be worth on the second hand market? I have tried doing web research, but have come up with nothing very helpful. I have had someone ask what the price is, and am myself unable to come up with a figure which is fairly based on any facts or knowledge.

Any advice gratefully received.

If you google it , as I have just done, you will see a 2nd hand one on offer earlier in the year at 1900 dollars = £1000
amd another on offer for £1250 - brand new.

good luck

Re: Can anyone tell me what it\'s worth please?

Thanks very much for that Stephen.

I did see both when I searched, however I disregarded the £1,250 "brand new" on the basis that they cost significantly more than that. I understood from the vendor of the boat that it cost him in excess of £3,500.

The US$1,900 I wasn't sure how to use, as I believe that everything is so much cheaper in the States. However, in the absence of anything relevant from the UK market then I guess that I will have to use that to set the price.

I would hang on to it if I was you, you just never know? It's also a bloody sight more use than bathing ladder! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Good advice, and I started out thinking that way.

However my family likes to swim, and our long distance voyaging is limited to The Netherlands and back once a year. Long term we'd love to go to the Baltic if we could afford to not work for that long and own a boat at the same time, but that's unlikely. Even that doesn't require wind vane steering though.

Thanks.

So, you would replace it with an electric auto pilot, or be stuck on the helm all the time?I should think long and hard if I was you, which I aint, and you must do what you think is right, but I think you will regret selling it come the end /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I suspect you're talking from experience, and there has to be a risk that your wisdom is correct, even though you're not me! The boat does have a good quality (Autohelm) autopilot, along with an engine start battery and 3 off very good "house" batteries. I'm a big fan off electric autopilots, because they steer the one time we don't want to, i.e. when motoring. They do a far better job than I could too.

It comes down to the value. We're forking out £1,100 for a new genoa, and much bigger amount for all new canvaswork, including a cockpit tent etc. The self-steering could potentially make a handsome contribution to that. Its a lot of dosh to have sitting in the attic on an offchance.

Having said that, I'm sure it would be a lot more dosh to buy another if I ever needed one. However, I'm pretty sure I won't. (Actually you've cast enough doubt in my mind that I discussed it briefly with SWMBO before typing this reply, and we did a fag packet calculation of how many years it would take to pay off the mortgage before deciding we wouldn't ever have the opportunity to sail off in to the wide blue yonder!)

So, I still want to sell it if its worth a decent amount, but will take your advice if it isn't.

Bill

P.S. I used to think I was indecisive, now I'm absolutely sure that I am!

Re: Can anyone tell me what it\'s worth please?

Hi Bill,

I have a windvane on my boat, and I would not want to be without it, but like I said, I aint you, and I sail singlehanded 99% of the time, so it's a godsend, I also have a tiller pilot, that I only use when motoring, because the propwash can bugger up the servo blade on the windvane.

It's all horses for courses mate, and I can understand what you are saying. Boats are always big holes in water, just to chuck money into, so you will have to work out the best way for you to do that, I was really just trying to suggest that you proceed with caution. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I can suggest a good anaesthetic should your wallet need it at anytime! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Frankly, I'm appalled.

Fancy giving up all that marina-cred!

Now, being serious, perhaps one question to consider is how much the value would be affected by putting it on the boat. Seems to me that, if you cannot get an "almost new" price for it you may as well give it a go.

Dear Appalled of Woodbridge,

Many thanks for your letter dated this 4th December 2006. I hope we can assure you that all possible courses of action will be investigated regarding this matter.

Now Mirelle, the furthest we've ever got together in the same boat is the Walton Backwaters (from the Deben). Certainly on my boat it's very hard to get you off the helm, so what do I want with self-steering?! (You're very good at letting me steer yours of course.)

In the absence of any further "steers", (tee hee), it seems as though the Sailomat is worth around the same as a new genoa. Not as much as I'd hoped, but a significant sum to stick in the attic and allow to depreciate.

On the other hand if you sell it, your yacht will presumably go down in value. But will the reduction be as much as you get for selling the windvane?
