I would be grateful if anyone could recommend a solicitor for help with tweaking a standard RYA contract for a private boat sale.
It is to cover deferred payments and business.
Many thanks

Most of the big Admiralty solicitors, Holman Fenwick & Willan, Bentley Stokes & Lowless, Ince & Co, Clyde & Co, More Fisher Brown, etc., etc., have a yacht department.

Prices are not cheap but the quality, in my experience, is good.

Local solicitors are cheaper but tend to cost more in the end as they do not have the experience of the specialised work in commercial and maritime matters, including salvage and wreck removal.

Trust this may help.

Not sure why you would need a marine lawyer as it is a straightforward contract that allows for payment to be as agreed between the parties. Presumably you have agreed with the buyer the deferred payments and presumably transfer of title and any penalties for non compliance. Just write them into the contract in a clear and unambiguous way and ensure the buyer is clear what he is signing up for.

Well, thanks to all for your input. It is a pity no one can actually recommend a solicitor. I want to make sure that everything is covered as I have been let down badly by a buyer once already.
Cheers

Perhaps the reason why you are not getting a big response is that very few people use a solicitor for boat transactions so do not have personal experience.

You may get better advice from specialist brokers who are prepared to handle just the transaction. Obviously don't know the details of the deal you are proposing, but guess your concern is about security of your future payments. Much of that is dependent on your confidence that the buyer will perform and the mechanism to ensure that he does when he has taken possession of the boat, so retention of title until he has performed will be key.

Couple of recommendations of people to talk to. First is John Rodriguez www.jryachts.com a very experienced broker who knows how to handle unconventional deals. He posts here under the name jonic and a number of other forum members have used him in tricky situations. The second is www.ward-mckenzie.co.uk who are a marine consultancy and I know people who have used them in the past for negotiating and managing purchase contracts.

Hope this helps.

Hi
A few years ago I used Shoosmiths when I purchased a UK registered boat that had been in France for about 20yrs.
From memory they had an office in Southampton.
There was a problem with the builders cert, which they sorted out.
They did a good job at the time.
They were / are ? on the RYA list
