Fitted to a Perkins 4-107 engine ... Yeh I know it's a rusty lump !! Result of all those years sitting down there forgotten under cockpit sole !! And sorry about photo quality - blazing sunshine and shadows casting over cockpit bilges !!

I need to check oil levels / refill or whatever if its done on it ... filter ? Once I have Model and Name - I may be able to get some sort of plans / schematics / instructions !! ??

I have a grating noise intermittent and can be any time when in gear ... first I thought I had stern gear failure outside the boat after battering way out of shallow cnal at home ... but all appears ok outside hull. Then I saw that no water was dripping from stern seal - stripped that while afloat - and got water to finally drip through .... re-packed.... still noise - so now it's gearbox ... and I thought maybe oil levels / old oil / water etc.

So can anyone ID the box please ? Anyone with manual - workshop for it ?

Really appreciate help ..

It looks like a Newage PRM but it's difficult to see through all the rust!
Mermaid Marine Ltd 72 Cobham Road, Ferndown Industrial Estate, Wimborne Dorset BH21 7RN 01202 891824 keep spares and might be able to help more with a positive ID. I have a pdf manual for the PRM140/265 range if that's what it turns out to be (but I don't think it is).

It's defnitely a PRM, same as fitted to my 2.5 BMC Commander. Sorry, can't locate the (excellent) manual at the moment.

If the oil level is tooo low, then the clutches disengage so you lose power. From memory, the manual doesn't mention noise on occurence of too low an oil level so I would suspect that there is something up with the gearbox mechancially.

FWIW - To do some work recently on mine, I removed my gearbox from the boat - it made it soo much easier, and it wasn't too much effort to remove. Note that there is an odd length short bolt on part of the flange, and the threads are unusual - UNCF if I remember correctly.

PRM hydraulic gearboxes NOW use normal engine oil.
There should be an oil cooler on it. It is usually possible to lock it in gear using a bolt in the event of failure.
I have the info on a 101 but if you go thro the web and make some phone calls you will find that PRM / NEWAGE will be very helpful.

thanks all ....

If someone could say what model that would be great ... it's fitted to a 40HP Perkins 4-107 ....

If anyone has the manual and doesn't mind scanning ?? I would really appreciate.

The problem as I said is a random intermittent grating noise from the shaft.... when in gear. Everything appears to run OK ...
Having "pushed" the boat through mud and silt to exit the canal at my house - we thought maybe the rope-cutter or something else external was moved or damaged. We have no tides here and I have no slip to haul her up ... so I heaved the bow down to elevate the stern. I could only just see the prop in the cloudy water ... and all "appeared" ok - but cannot be certain.
So next was to check intenal areas ... last being gearbox.

If anyone else has had such a hard grating noise when in gear ... intermittent random ... close throttle out of gear - in gear open again and all fine for a minute or so and starts again ... I would be extremely interested to know what it was ... or if anyone has any ideas ?

The grating noise from PRM gearboxes is probably the plates rattling.
Normally you hear it at low RPM, ticking over in gear. Once the boat is underway and more RPM added, the noise goes.

I'm told, and it's also pointed out in the manual, these noises are quite normal in old PRM gearboxes and nothing to worry about.

MMM interesting ... Noted.

My noise is quite loud ... and is quite alarming. It happens at 1/4 - 1/3rd throttle ... probably at more but then engine noise is quite loud then and probably drowned out. I don't get it at slow speed in gear.

We haven't actually confirmed it is the box yet !! Having no tides here and boat at back of house mooring - it's not so easy to dry her out to look at stern gear.
