A friend of mine has just bought his fourteen year old a small
GRP motortrail, day boat, for his birthday, nothing special and very basic, just somthing for the lad to take an interest in and learn from.
(I wish my father had bought me a boat for my 14th)

He didn't spend a lot on it, as it needs some attention.
The main thing being the engine, which he has spent some considerable time stripping down and sorting, only to find the CDI unit may have gone.

Can anyone help with a CDI unit that works from a Mariner outboard, 60HP twin cylinder with twin carbs.
Obviously he doesn't want to spend mega bucks on a new one, after the money and time he has already spent on this project.
He is extremely dissapointed, and frustrated, after the time and money already spent, not being able to get this boat going for his lad.
Any help or advice appreciated.
thanks
Pete

I can't help but in order for anyone to have a chance you should quote the full model details. That is make, Hp & year or model number, preferably both.

Despite the cost his best bet may be to take it to a Mariner dealer as the easiest perhaps only way of checking bits of an electronic ignition system is by substitution.

You can locate dealers from the EP Barrus website

But 60hp sounds a bit much as plaything for a 14 year old!

Mabe he wont go to sea with it. Just scream safely around Windermere at several 10s of knots

A 60hp would weigh rather a lot.... would love to see what the boat looks like with that on the back

On a serious note... did you mean 6hp by any chance?

How on earth will a 14 year old get adequate insurance for such a big engine? Your friend should perhaps have sent his 14 year old on a RYA sailing course. Perhaps it best if the engine does not get fixed!

Thank you for your replies ,but.
This is a guy who has spent his life in the marine industry, and brought up 5 boys.
His oldest son sailed with me as a deck hand, he now has an MCA marine officers certificate of competancy.
I am a qualified master, and a marine pilot, and do not question his experience or reasoning for using this boat or engine. (and this is on the Humber)

By the way if you need any expert repairs on your GRP hull
I wiil more than be happy to pass on his details.

Please be assurred the lad will not be going out without, experienced and qualified back up.

I do however take the point on more information on the engine required.

Can anybody give me information on what is required and if
they can supply the engine part please?
