I still havent got a rolling anything!I just want to be able to roll my jib thats its either in or out.Of course sometimes just a bit of sail might be useful for manovering.

Instead of fitting my old drum, i wonderd why i couldent fit the smallest plastimo which would be fine but not for reefing, with that "kit" i would get the "foils" which goes around the forstay.

The old in out system can be a problem to roll as the hanks slip on the stay, and im definatly not going to use anchor chain for the forstay!!

Can i cut off my hanks from my jib and feed the sail into the grove in the foil?Or must i have a special sail for the foil??

If a Folkboat had a plastimo reefing system and another had ferlex ferling and the third folkboat hanked on sail and cut off the hanks could one sail be shared by the three boats? That is would that standard sail fit each of the rolling systems without modification???

Im trying to be as specific as possiable! As i dont want to buy a sail for rolling!I want my sail to be rolled and so far the sailmakers want to know will i be rolling or not,and i tell them i want a standard sail which i will roll!!Umm

You want to use the system as a Furling system rather than a reefing.

Fit of the sail on the foil wiill depend on whether the sail has a boltrope suitable for use with the foil - i.e. not only whether it will fit into the slot, but that the rope is sufficiently strongly secured to the sail!, and of course, that the different boats all have a similar sized slot.

Whether you can use the same sail with different boats is really dependent on the position of your genoa track on the different boats, and whether you have sufficient adjustment to enable that sail to be used. The fact that you dont want to reef - only furl means that this problem is simplified somewhat, but the only way to find out is to try it!.

When I had a new genoa made, the sailmaker came along to measure and had a selection of different luff tape/bolt rope samples. He tried several in my foil before choosing the best size so my guess is that bolt rope sizes are dependent on both the manufacturer and the model of foil you choose.

A few points here:

The bolt rope must be matched to the foil and is usually a special type which will run easily in the extrusion. You will almost certainly have to fit a new luff tape with built in luff wire/rope. This will almost certainly mean removing thehank cringles.

Fitting a roller furlingdrum is likely to shorten the max lufflength and it may be that your old sail will be too long in the luff. The tack will alsobe raised and this may cause problems with the lead to the sheet car.

Not being designed to roll it will look pretty baggy round the foil, even if you are not going to be set if part rolled.

There will be no UV strip so if you are leaving the sail rolled on the boat it will deteriorate quickly.

In short, its best to get a new sail or at least have an old one recut and modified to suit roller furling. You may find a secondhand roller sail through the Folkboat Owners Association.

My sails prior to me replacing last year, all dated pre roller reefing on TC.

When talking to the sail maker he was getting confused as I kept talking about slugs to go onto the sail and into the foil, similar principle to mainsail slugs.

In the early days of roller reefing many companies made sliders/slugs/converters available to allow sailors to use their old sails rather than buying all new gear. It sounds like this is exactly what you need in the interim period prior to buying a new head sail in the future. I don't know if anyone knows where you can buy these things, I have a load on my older sails, but until I buy my next head sail I need them as spare sails.

I will photograph one if you like to give an idea, but in very simple term it looks as

O==O on its side, about 2in long, the nylon solid tube is designed to act as the bolt rope.

Hope this helps.....
