Can a fishfinder\'s transducer be mounted inside a grp hull?

I've just bought a cheap Eagle fishfinder to replace a very ancient seafarer echo-sounder (non-functioning).

The instruction book says to fit the transducer to the transom, but it would be easier if I could fit inside the hull.

Any inside knowledge?

Would it need to be mounted in oil?

Thanks.

If it's the Cuda model, see page 14 of the manual - the short answer is yes, you can!

yes - easiest way to finf a suitable stot inside is to set the unit up and have the transucer connected. now fill a ballon with about half a pint of water and tie a knot.
place ballon in hull at possible mounting points and put the 'ducer on it pushing down slightly so that any air will move to one side and not be bellow the 'ducer. look at the image you get and try a few spots untill you get the best image. blob of sikaflex or silicone to replace the ballon and hold 'duncer in position until it's gone off - job done after you have rerouted the wire of course!

Inside knowledge is always usefull! (when mounting inside!)
Mounting the Doo Dah in silicone type stuff is ok.
Pick a "flat" area aft is the best way.
Wants to be pointing "down" not sideways if yer gets me drift.
They have to be "airtight" that,s why oil is used.
But squidgey stuff is ok, so long as air bubbles aren,t in there.
Just "stuck" one in My boat ,works ok.
Make sure nothing can bump into it ,cos it upsets them.

Mounted mine using araldite---it's important to use the traditional slow setting stuff rather than the new quick set stuff as you don't want any air bubbles in it. Make a small circular "dam" with some putty, pour in some araldite, press in transducer and Roberts your uncle.

Re: Can a fishfinder\'s transducer be mounted inside a grp hull?

I use my cheapo fishfinder in my 24ft Waarschip which has a deep keel for its length, so I often like to scout anchorages in my plywood dinghy, taking the fishfinder along attached to a small (tiny) 12v battery. When on the W24, I have the Xducer on a foil section plank which dips into the water over the stern.

One time, I'm in the dinghy rowing along and dipping the Xducer over the side every now and again, I put it in the bottom and noticed the screen was still showing the depth. Huh? Then I saw that I had put it proper side down on the flat bottom and it was sitting in a little puddle of water brought in with the last dip. This was enough to pass the signal through the hull. I will try the same in the W24, which has a sililar plywood bottom.

cheers

My weekender boat ... I mixed a generous blob of 1 hr Epoxy on the transducer head itself ... then squidged it down into the spot I wanted ... no putty dam, no messing ... works a treat.

I do prefer the oil tube though ... means that you can remove it if you want to go dinghy sounding etc. or if you want to service ..
