cause the engine charge indicator light/alarm to flash/sound intermittently ?

Battery definitely on last legs as the voltage drops like a stone with a 5 amp load (from 14.2v to 8v in 2 hours).

It is being replaced imminently :-)

Not as far as I am aware.

I would check around the whole warning light circuit and alternator circuit for dodgy connections.

Also check alternator brushes ( assuming it has brushes)

Could be other things including internal alternator/ rectifier/ regulator intermittent faults.

thanks Vic for tips

Alternator attached to VP 2030. Checked Belt. Can run for hours and then for no apparent reason the alarm will sound erratically.

Battery is so dead that its possibly not actually providing any power ? The voltage show 14.4 constantly when the engine is running.

The other thing I've just read somewhere is that if the SOLAR panel outputs a higher voltage than the alternator this can upset the alarm ?

SOLAR Panel goes through a Marlec regulator, is this possible ?

We had an ancient started battery fitted to the boat when we bought it. And lots of dust from the alternator belt. No more dust after we changed the battery. So it's possible it's stalling the alternator?

A few seasons ago I went to start the boat and the batteries were flat, dead. I got a charger/starter and managed to get sufficient juice to start the engine. The alternator/charge warning lights came on and staid on mostly. I switched the engine off and left the charger on for a while. After a good charge I restarted the engine and the lights went out as normal. Now, this could have been dampness, whatever, but after the good charge I never had this issue again. I bought a shore power charger after that.
