Having left our boat in Ireland for the rest of the year I am looking for the opportunity to take the kids camping and dinghy sailing on weekends when we are not in Ireland. Can anybody suggest camp sites in the SE of England where one can easily camp and sail in sheltered waters? Somewhere that has a slipway as part of the camp site would be ideal.

Here, try this.
It is the Hostellers Sailing Club based at Paglesham on the River Roach, near Southend.

Excellent site, and you will see from their Cruising Log, that they are doing exactly what you want to do, for b#gger all money.

If this is to be a regular thing you should be looking at joining the Camping and Carvanning Club and the Boating Group thereof.

See here for the Boating Group

It is a very friendly group which we belonged to for many years. The web site will give you an idea of the places they camp and dinghy sail. Membership of the Camping Club will give you access to a number of excellent club sites. You also get a very comprehensive camping site guide. The Boating group also compile their own little site list giving details of sites with nearby access to water for small boats.

Brightlingsea's a good place. safe water in the Colne, or the Blackwater for a long trip. There's a camp site 300 yards or so from the local hard. Stayed there a few times. It's basic with just showers and loos, but there's plenty of places in town for eating, drinking and supplies.
