Cycling alongside the River Camel yesterday, upstream of Padstow, I spotted what looked like a pre-IALA black starboard hand buoy. Was this an illusion, something else entirely or a case of 'we'll change to IALA dreckly'?

Thames bouyage...

Motoring up the river one day, a very good friend of mine, an accomplished sailor, saw a white "marker" and asked "is that a channel marker?"

"No," I replied, "it's a swan".

As the creature was feeding from the river bed at the time, his wife added, perhaps unnecessarily, "a swan's arse to be precise."

I suppose it could be argued that that is nature's way of telling you that the swan can reach the weeds on the river bed there...

:)
