Should the feed from the calorifier to the hot tap be taken from the top (advantage- it gets hot quicker) or the bottom of the calorifier (advantage- easier to drain the tank)?
My boat has the feed from the bottom, but it looks as is it has been swapped over at some point in the past.
Can anyone offer advice please?

Surecal are pretty good in the average price range. Isotemp are a bit more expensive but better finished.

+1 for Surecal, but with a word of caution. Unless they have changed the wording on their website the standard calorifier comes with a 30PSI pressure relief valve. Our pump has a design pressure of 42PSI, you can imagine what happened. I really like the Surecal stuff but with one gripe. They wouldn't send me a new (suitable) PRV unless they received the original back first.
Other than that, excellent value and good comm's.

A while back we were on a boat and the owner was complaining his hot water ran out very quickly. I was puzzled as the tank was certainly big enough.

After an hour with the immersion on the water was piping hot. We demonstrated this by drawing a basin of water.

10 minutes later there was almost no heat in the water from the hot tap.

Simple answer was the outlet being fitted incorrectly to the bottom of the tank.
