Calorifier

I've recently fitted a 20 litre water heater (calorifier) to my boat and connected it to the engine (a Yanmar 2GMF20) with 5/8" ID heater hose.

I've run the engine on several occasions but the water in the calorifier never seems to get hot. The engine itself heats up to about 140F - 160F (~60 - 70C) according to the water temperature gauge.

I've looped back the engine hot water outlet to the inlet to check water is actually flowing and it is hot - which it is. I've also checked there's no blockage in the calorifier by blowing through the inlet hose.

Any ideas what might be wrong?

Regards,

Stephen.

Is it a raw water cooled engine? if so you will never get the water temp in the calorifier up very high, 60-70c is low for a heat exchanger engine, should be more like 80c. I would also check you have got the connections on the engine correct and that hot water is actually flowing through the calorifier, I would also check your thermostat. Hope this helps.

Also 5 gals of cold water will take a fair amount of heating and could well be keeping yopur engine cool, if it's not working hard for a fair period.

I have a five gallon water heater and a fresh water cooled engine, and it takes a full hour of running to get the calorifier hot. Are you sure you haven't crossed the inlet hose with the outlet one ?

Fitted fresh water heat exchanger system (Aquafax, Luton) to elderly Volvo MD11C and interconnected via 3-way valve to a ss. calorifier ca. 20l (all ss so heat exchange not as good as copper) and car heater matrix. All work fine. About 30 mins motoring gives full tank of hot water, and engine more economical at same revs. Hot air from heater matrix in about 5 mins. Presume you have indirect cooling for engine? Would not look back to raw water cooling! Check the temperature of water (a) entering calorifier and (b) water exiting calorifier.
