hope someone can help please?

photo is of the thermostats on our calorifier- recently when on mains water gets too hot - almost steaming- have tried adjusting setting on the dial on photo and makes no difference - trip button on furthest away thermostat has popped up - my assumption is that closest to camera thermostat has failed and that second one is effectively a safety back up and once heat exceeds setting on second one it trips - does that sound a reasonable conclusion?

if yes - take it i need to remove the closest one only and replace it , looks like it is secured by bolts or screws on top and then with wiring removed should slide out and be (hopefully) easily replaced !

welcome any guidance please thanks

Your diagnosis is correct. The thermostat should just lift out once the screws are removed - the thermostat slides into a tube, so water doesn't come out!

you are right- it does slide up out of a tube (or to be precise they slide up out of the tubes) will have to loosen calorifier mountings as the thermostat hits the overhang above it before being all the way out - will sort it once back in uk near to a plumbers suppliers - thanks again for guidance
