hey-my calorifier doesnt do anything at all. yet my engine never overheats. how can this be? if there was an airlock, surely the engine would tell me soon enough? any suggestions for a fix? if it IS an airlock, how can i clear it? many thanks

Your engine is not getting hot? do you mean it is running at normal temperature? If so the 2 pipes from the engine to the cal. should be hot to heat the water in the cal.If not you have an airlock in the pipes feeding the cal.Remove the top one from the engine and fill with antifreeze mix usually 50:1.keep at same level as the place you took it from put back and run the engine and all should be OK.DONT scald yourself as these pipes can be very hot. Some engines are "pigs" to get the flow initially flowing I have found if you get the engine hot then give the throttle a few fast bursts it gets it started. Once you get flow it will remain. The worring part is have you had flow before and if so why has it suddenly stopped.

Apart from an airlock, which is unlikely if you haven't been playing with the cooling system, you should look at the possibility of a failed thermostat.

There are probably two in the system, either failing safe, in the open position, will produce a lack of hot water.

The first to open, usually at 65C, is on engine/calorifier, the second is in the normal position in the head/cooling outlet, set to open at 80C.

Just a minor point, I think you meant to say 50% antifreeze, not 50:1.
