I've seen a couple of threads on calorifier connections and so decided to have a look at mine because we have never really got hot water from the system.. It seems I have a "home made" connection which might be a problem..

Here are a couple of images..

http://1drv.ms/RMMkZB

In the first image I have put a circle around the one connection.. The other connection goes to the bottom of the block..

The second image is a zoomed in picture of the "T" piece in the main pipe..

I don't know the water flow path of the engine but would have thought to get hot water both feed and return would need to be on the block side of the thermostat..

Is this a reasonable way to connect the calorifier?

Yes, it's raw water cooled but the engine still gets up to 70C odd.. If that water was circulating through the calorifier it should get fairly warm shouldn't it?

Take off should be from the thermostat area shouldn't it? photo from my Sealine but it was a too long ago to remember the hose routing exactly. Can't remember timing how long it took on the Sealine to heat up but it did. On the yacht with RW cooled 28 hp engine it takes about 40 minutes.

There are thousands of raw water cooled engines providing hot water for calorifiers.

Indeed there are, and none of them come close to the temperatures given by a closed system, the OPs engine coolant temp is only around 70c which is typical of a petrol raw cooled system and that will not change. Raw cooled diesels of the type found on yachts often fare better due to the higher temperature.

I take your point about petrol v diesel temperatures, although I have no experience of the former. However, the man who did the job shown on my website was more than happy. In my case with a bukh 20 the calorifier water was far too hot to touch within about 20 minutes of motoring.

Thanks all for the input.. Might have to do some experimenting and see if it can be improved..

Anyone know where to get the fittings for the engine so if I open up one of the blanked off holes I can screw in the hose fitting?
