Calor small bottles

I note today the 29th December Calor have decided out of kindness to reintroduce the small bottles to the boating and caravan users. The truth is they were forced to because they were losing to much business to Flo Gas. Retailers of gas were switching their whole range to Flo gas and dumping Calor. Another well thought out decision by some overpaid Chief Executive at Calor.

They can suck it, I won’t be supporting their business now or in the future. FloGas are better in every way and have identically sized bottles and a pro consumer attitude.
I've found that neither the 4.5kg Flogas bottles fit into my gas locker, one due to the height and other due to girth. Both are too big. 4.5kg Calor bottles however fit with room to spare.

Having measured all three I find that very hard to believe, you can’t have room to spare given the millimetre differences in size. I guess you’re stuck paying Calor though so sucks to be you. Only a matter of time before your next nightmare. Personally I’d do my utmost to change the locker…

Me neither. We switched from Camping Gaz to Calor about 6 years ago after a distribution problem with Gaz about 2017 time. After all Calor have been around for decades and were available everywhere. That decision I now regret.

The announcement is to be welcomed and a big thank you to Hillary for his work with others to persuade Calor to change their minds. So panic over, normal service resumed, nothing to see here and everyone can sit down and have a cup of tea. Of course you might wonder how long it will take for Calor to re-establish supply lines, after all their main customers during a winter are those homes off grid with large tanks for heating etc. Judging by the comments on the Calor FB page they are not doing too well in this sector either.

The caravanning and boating season tends to kick off at Easter, which is early this year. Will Calor have sufficient stock throughout the land to meet the demands by April? Or will late Autumn be a more likely scenario?

The only good thing for us was the decision we made to remove ourselves from the problem and go electric cooking :)

I believe that the overall size of the flogas bottle is the same as calors, it is the 'base' that can be quite different. I made my own 'holders' for the calor gas bottles, and to take the flogas I will need to modify it quite bit, to the extent I'm going to look at a 7kg bottle which will likely be calor; even though they don't deserve my custom.

Everyone seems to have forgotten that Calor weren’t supplying these for three YEARS before they even announced they planned to withdraw them. Normal service is for Calor to make your life hell, why on earth would anyone go back?!
Don’t forget, Calor are also the ones ripping you off with Campingaz in the Uk!

lustyd has hit the nail on the head. There is a lot of anger over the way Calor treated there loyal customers. I purchased all the fittings so I could refill my own cylinders and other people had to pay deposits to Flo gas or re design their gas lockers. A total PR cock up which they wont recover from.

It is unfortunate, but true. It applies to all the people who own Moody 34/346 I've talked to. I could grind away part of the gutter of the gas locker and therefore get two dumpy Flogas bottles in.

If this is all rectified as has been published I don't see the need to take a grinder to my boat, thanks.

There are 2 shapes of Flogas bottle, and you don't know which you'll get. One is taller and skinnier than a calor.

Me too. A £20 connecting pipe, the bathroom scales, a container full of water and a black bin liner allows me to get 4 refills from a 15 kilo Propane bottle. They work out at £12.50 a fill. A 9 kilo refill in Wellington NZ, from an official refill depot, was just over £20 last year. Exchange cylinder from Bunnings £28.

You can see by the prices Calor are taking the piss. Half the gas for twice the price. And dont get me onto Camping Gaz prices...........................

The problem with safefill, is I believe, that morrisons is pulling out of gas refilling and changing to ev charging points plus there aren't many morrisons in my area. This means going to self fill and I can't work out whether the safety system on the bottles will allow that.

I need to measure the space, especially height, that I have on my boat as the flogas 7kg butane bottle is the same dimensions as calors. This is a medium term project for me as I have quite a few 4.5kg calor bottles.

Might be worth exploring if there is any independent retailer near the boat or home. I did the same and found I had one only three miles away from home, they weren't on any map and I only came across them by Googling LPG suppliers, now I see they are listed.

Of the 4 years since people were reliably able to source a 4.5KG from Calor only a few months has been since the withdrawal so if you think this announcement resolves anything you’re likely to be disappointed. This is purely them scrambling to maintain their effective monopoly and I imagine sourcing cylinders will remain as difficult as it was in recent years.
It’s up to you though, it’s your cruising that’ll be affected when you’re out of gas and retailers are saying they’ve not seen a full one for years.

As far as I can tell Calor have not reopened their depots to the public so you’re very much subject to the whim of their deliveries.
