Just fitting the gearbox spline modification parts to a Penta 2002 with MS2 gearbox. When removing the old splined flywheel mounted coupling ready to fit its replacement I noticed that the flywheel was not keyed onto the crankshaft but was bolted face to face to a flange which is presumably located on the actual crank. I noticed this when attempting to locate the thru bolt holes for the new coupling after previously inadvertently rotating the engine by hand. I then had to shine a light into the flywheel housing and rotate the engine some more until the bolt holes were aligned again. The new Cush bolts were successfully installed which served to bolt the flywheel back to its mating flange and the new coupling component was positioned over the bolt heads. Unfortunately the gearbox installation was not nearly so straightforward because the hex profile shaft refused to be located within the coupling. In the end out of frustration and nearly freezing to death I gave up and went home.

Having had time to reflect on the situation I'm now worried about alignment between flywheel and crank. By completely unbolting the flywheel from the crank and disturbing the crank position have I lost a small amount of alignment causing the gearbox shaft location problems. If I were to eventually succeed with the gearbox installation will I crank the engine over only to find total engine imbalance because the flywheel is no longer concentric to the crank or am I suffering from some kind of imaginative disorder fuelled by my failure to complete the job last night.

From memory you should be ok
There are 2 modifications I assume yours is just the later style flange rather than the the hex

The gearbox is mounted to the bell housing flange so it will go back where is was before you touched it

I don't think that the flywheel is rotationally specific but you should be able to download the workshop manual from the VP site.

I did mine with the DB Marine hex conversion but essentially it was the same process with a new carrier ring fitting on cushioned bolts. If the bolts into the flywheel are in the same holes then it must line up (must is a big word I appreciate). How can it not?

I don't imagine that the flywheel is anything more than just a flywheel and the starter ring. Doesn't look like it.

MS2B transmission

Make sure you have removed the old carrier and bolts then discard them. I did not and the transmission did not fit back to the bell housing.

I forgot to take off the old carrier when installing the Hex conversion and could not reinstall the MS2B transmission to the bell housing. That mabe the problem you are having.

Discard the old carrier and bolts.
