Now that I'm carrying the o/b in the car when I go down to the boat I'm getting a bit pissed off by the smell of petrol from the boot when I'm driving. Not safe either!

Anyway, I stuck it in the flushing tank on Sunday night, started it and then turned off the fuel at the tap. And waited for it to stop. And waited.....

After five minutes gave up. So that's why it's leaking petrol. The fuel tap is built into the carb. Anyone stripped one of these down? Is it likely to be fixable??

These engines use very little petrol. I find that it takes a long time for the fuel in the carb to be used up once the tap is closed, this will particularly be the case if you only run at tickover. Your fuel tap may well be leaking, but do not automatically assume that this is the case. Incidentally, it is quite safe to run the engine out of the water since it is air-cooled, at least I have done so many times to do exactly what you are trying to achieve before storing/transporting the engine on its side with no adverse consequences.

I always run it with its leg in a bucket. I thought you had to cool the exhaust? It certainly has a lot of water in it when you lift it out.

Anyway I'll try waiting a bit longer and see if it stops...

It could be the fuel in the carb that I can smell in the boot.

Underneath the floatbowl you'll find a brass butterfly nut which is accessible. Before you lay the engine down in the boot, lean the engine against a wall. Undo the butterfly till the remaining petrol drains out (about a tablepoonful) Remember to do the nut up again! .... And you won't get any petrol fumes in your car.

I would also check the sealing ring washer under the air vent knob on the filler cap. My BF2, 2.5 tears old recently had this ring washer disintegrate, very smelly in the car. Fixed for about 79p, part no H217624ZV000 + VAT.

I find that it is important to switch off the fuel 20-30 sec before stopping the motor, Usually about 30yards off the slip in my case Also make sure that the filler cap breather is fully closed off before laying down on its side
