We are having our first shake down cruise from Shotley in our new (to us) Oceanlord this weekend prior to the Easter w/e trip to Portsmouth.

Given that a moderate easterly is forecast, where should we go. Various estuaries north of here read like its not a good idea to enter in easterlies, and that some entrance buoys are not even in place at this time of year.

Nothing to adventurous for SWMBO and me

Any ideas???

Chris

good wind for a reach down to the Blackwater or Crouch - both permanently buoyed; Burnham marina in the crouch or Bradwell in the Blackwater - or pick up an empty mooring at W mersea - should be plenty free this time of year or anchor in Pyefleet or at Osea - should be about 5-6 hrs in an oceanlord. Then a fetch back up the wallet.

Brightlingsea springs to my mind, about 25 miles south of The Orwell and reasonably easy entrance. Get the tides right and it is a breeze down the Wallet past Walton and Clacton Piers, turn right after Jaywick. Anchor in Pyefleet Creek or go into Brightlingsea Harbour.

Bright, ingsea a good idea, but maybe West Mersea and pick up a buoy. You will need a dinghy/outboard this time of year.
VHF callsign YC1 on entering the well marked channel.

If you are going to Brightlingsea then ring the harbourmaster and find out if the water taxi is running. If not then you will have to have a dinghy to go ashore - the pontoons are in the creek - no electricity and no loos except in the Colne Yacht club (key from harbourmasters hut now as they stopped leaving the loos and showers open due to trouble).

May see you in Bradwell - boat back in for Easter. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Enjoy your maiden voyage!

Brightlingsea is mid stream pontoons though, so no easy shore access.... i'd head for Bradwell if you want really easy, and wander over to the Green Man... good food, good beer....and 2mins from the marina... very easy to get into, very easy passage straight up the Wallet, and nothing difficult about entering the Blackwater... and an Easterly would suit...

If you go to Brightlingsea and there's no taxi the harbourmaster will ferry you ashore. Jon usually starts the taxi service from Easter though.
If you fancy an Indian I can recommend Kovalum - south Indian - superb and on the water front near the Yachtsman's pub. Downside is the building work on the old Stone's shipyard.

Kovalam seconded. Specialise in Fish Curry. Book though, I went there on a Saturday at 6-45 and it was full until 10-30.
