A 50th Anniversary is being held in France, but do get in contact here anyway.

If you know of or have known of any Maicas in the Uk I would also be interested to hear about them.

The anniversary celebrations are being organised by Stephane Hupin who runs a very good french website, www.maica.fr

He would love to hear from UK Maica owners. his email which I have mangled to avoid spammers is "contact at maica dot fr" without spaces and a '.' for 'dot'

Cheers and BTW, this is of course entirely non-commercial.

Wotta blast from the past!!

The original MAICA. designed by Illingworth & Primrose and built by Burnes of Bosham, class winner in the 1963 Fastnet, was berthed in Salcombe in the late 60's. She had a transom stern - just like a large Folkboat really - but when produced by a Cherbourg yard (who turned them out on a production line a dozen at a time) a more elegant counter was added.

With other Oxford men I chartered her for two months every year from '68 to '70, receiving fantastic receptions both in Cherbourg and St Malo. That last season was memorable in not only marrying the cook but rounding Ushant for the first time - tho sharing your honeymoon with six sweaty blokes isn't to be recommended!

Where/when is the Anniversary celebration?

Pictures of her racing in Cowes Week look down on me as I write, so do make contact.

My pal Mark Cathcart, a New Zealander and a boatbuilder, bought this original Miaca in around 1981, did a lot of work on her and then, with his wife Reawyn sailed her across to the USA. I think they transited the Panama and sailed up to California.

I have tried a good few times to make contact with Mark but sadly have lost touch so I dont know what became of the boat but Mark sold her I guess in about 1984.

When he had her she was like a piece of furniture..

Hello Malaprop,

sounds like you have quite a bit of experience of Maicas. Perhaps you will be able to help me with the provenance of my Maica. Do give me a call 07869 153 901 or email me (obfuscated)

Wasn't the original Maica built for a frenchman? I believe the french maica lot are contemplating inviting his widow, Madame Rouault, to the celebrations which are to be in Benodet.(downstream from Quimper, just to West of Concarneau). I am hoping to get down there but I have quite a lot of work to do on the boat beforehand. Currently I am renovating the wrought iron floors and rebolting them. Remasting (a need) and re-engining(a want) are also on the list plus some fitting out below. I have already replaced a beam shelf and a half, the cockpit, many deckbeams, deck, most of the transom and fashion pieces, coachroof sides...

Mine is called "Winwilloe of Portlemouth" (transom stern), so there is some link with Salcombe as the Portlemouth is the one opposite Salcombe and her first owner still lives in East Portlemouth. As It happens I used to go on holiday to Salcombe as a teenager in the late 60s so I would be interested
if you could remember where your Maica's mooring was.

Cheers

Hi Manx_Nobby

before I did my post in this thread I search the forum for 'Maica' and found one thread which concerned a Maica in th US suffering from rot. I think it was on the West coast.

Cheers
Chris

Dylan

that's a very pretty counter sterned Maica. Whose is she and when was the picture taken.

BTW, seems that in France the anniversary thing might be gathering steam with more events to come.

As far as I remember "Winwilloe of Portlemouth"was owned by Sir Harry Jeffcott who owned a holiday house and a farm at E Portlemouth. The church at E Portlemouth is dedicated to St Winwolloe. Sir Harry was something to do with Glaxos.

Thanks for the info Jonathan.

I have never been to the church in E Portlemouth but I intend to go soon.

I have spoken with a prevous owner there called Jephcott. I believe that he used to work in Falmouth.

Could you tell me where and when you remember Winwilloe from.

Thanks
Chris
