Why is it mobile phone companies like Orange are so crap?

In May SWMBO signed up to a contract with Orange £25 oer mnonth.

The first phone didn't work so she took it back to the crap phone warehouse who swapped it for a new one and promised to cancel the first contract.

A few weeks roll buy and a bill shows up for £75 -- way too high for 6 weeks of phone.

She calls Orange who say sorry, we seem to be billing you for two phones, we'll sort it out. She says fine send me a bill when you manage that, or a letter of confirmation.

Time passes. no mail no call. The this morning the phone doesn't work and she has a text message saying pay us £155 pounds.

So I call for her -- she has no phone.. Orange say they need her authorisation, I tell 'em to call her and sort it. They say can't do that, biut give me a another number -- that doesn't work.

So I call again, tell them to sort it or they lose my contract too and magically calls can be made out -- really hate it when I get lieed to like that. hmmm.

They first blamed crap phonewarehouse. Call them who confirm the cancellation was sent. ANother call to Orange who then tell me the cancellation of the old conctract had not been processed because the imei number of teh new phone was missing and the 30 day block on barring account that was put on when swmbo spoke witht hem last has expired..

Orange fellow now finds this number and gives it to cancellation people -- one wonders why they didn't manage that on their own...

Now he says in order to activate account he needs some payment for the threemonths.. fine I sday. £88 is what it should be, but before you do that I want at least a one month credit for all this bollixing around... umm cant do that he says.. not without talking to you wife... but she has authorised me to talk to you... yes he says but not about credit account... grrrr...

Ok I say call her back make sure you can give her the credit and get the bloody phone working..

yes..

As of now awaiting that.

Of course I am pretty sure that next month they will still not have cancelled the phone and the nnew 30 day hold on cutting it off will have expired and it will happen again.

Are all mobile phone co's so crap? only used orange and vodafone who are equally bad.

Also recently had to call Barclays.. another bloody call centre Paid a cheque in, told I was able to draw on it straightaway. Great . when I tried it failed. Had to use other account.. Called them up and said I dodn't have that facility after all. Created stink,. Got nice letter saying I had the facility and why was I creating.. Phones back and tolld them they were a bunch of idiots telling me one thing one day and something else the next.

Then told me they may have not let me cos they were suspicious about chque. Told them it was from my wife and that if they were suggesting that either she or I were attempting to defraud them, be prepared to for me to take the account elsewhere, including the boat mortgage.

Now waiting for letter from them too.

The trouble is that these days companies are run by 'high fliers' who earn their bonuses by providing shareholders with 'business growth'. By definition this means new business and that is where all effort is put. Existing customers don't matter, if a few leave along the way so what, so long as there are always new customers around the next marketing campaign.

My company use phones from several major companies on monthly contracts
Orange are by far the best & lowest cost (apart from 3 - which is a completely rubbish service).

I have always found Orange call centres and their service to be excellent - I think you have been unlucky. Whenever we have a broken phone they courier collect next morning and hand over a replacement phone.

Seems like your problems are caused by Car Phone Warehouse

If it's any consolation, you're not the only one.

Once upon a time I was tempted by cable TV and a less expensive phone. Cable & Wireless - Now NTL, but no better - said fine, we'll organise for you to keep your current number. The big day arrives. Cable TV works fine. Phone works fine, except... call from friends with cable phones arrive on my CW phome, while calls from BT lines arrive on the BT phone.

This goes on for a few weeks and many calls to complain. Eventually a youf comes round to sort it out. "It's all done. I've had to cut you off for now, but you'll be back on within the hour."

24 hours later, I get through to the call centre and tell them that I want my phone back on NOW. They promise it'll be fixed on Saturday morning. I tell them the if the phone doesn't work at midday. Their kit'll be on the doorstep at 1205.

BT were very obliging and got me a working phone by Monday morning. All CW's lines were disconnected, but I got bills and threatening letters from them for months afterwards for calls on a line that wasn't connected.

It took Watchdog to put a stop to it. The £50 compensation I got probably covered the cost of phone calls and recorded delivery letters.

Maybe unlucky, but Orange are consistantly crap -- delivered phone to wrong address, tried to make me pay for re-delivery, problems getting international call bar lifted -- they said it was and still couldn't call Canada. Took 3 days to sort out.

Problems with roaming -- last xmas went to Denmark for hols. checked I could use it internationally. Told yes, Get to Denmarkl, it doesn't work. Christmas Day call SWMBO's parents. Father has been taken into hospital with bowel cancer. no flights home etc.
Tried calling Orange from Denmark to set it. First girl say nothing can be done. then later says she'll try. I complain I was told I had teh service. She said I hadn't asked becuase there was no note on account. I told her to add note to account now saying I was peeved and she was unhelpful.

Get back to UK boxing day.

Father in law out of surgery doing well

Orange say no note added. no attempt to apply roaming was made.. grrrr.

Finally got a letter from them saying there was no roaming applied until after we came back -- hmm I knew that . What I wanted to know was why things were screwed up and why I was told I had the right when it didn't..

Course Voda were equally crap!

I too had problems with the 'crap phone warehouse' as you put it. (quite an apt name really!) They spent months trying to sort it and failed on six occaisions to do so. I wrote a letter to Sir Charles Dunsmore(I think) who is the md/owner of the company and got a reply within 3 days, not to mention various benefits/lots of compensation! I would recommend it if you're getting annoyed. Neadless to sat though, I am no longer with them!

I use Virgin PAYG on direct debit and to date have had excellent service. Bought a new phone for the wife at Xmas(also with Virgin) but she found it too small to use - swopped it for another easily(still kept £10 credit on each phone) tried to set up an account by phone - but operator got confused as I had bought the phone so officially it was mine although it was a present to the wife - even when my wife phoned she could not set up an account as I had bought the phone.......... A supervisor must have been listening and he took over the call - sorted it all out within 5 minutes and we BOTH got £20 credit on our phones!

I charge £40/hour admins fees for companies such as this, and bill them on a minute basis. They invariably refuse or forget to pay. I then issue a county court summons and they pay up. This makes me think that their customer service policy is based on "if we ignore you long enough you will go away" For the few that complain, they fork out, on the basis it is cheaper than to provide a proper service, properly staffed and resourced. If you paid your bill by credit card, invoke section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974, and ask for all your money back until the issue has been resolved... spin it out chaps you are on £40 an hour!

Youve had an easy ride compared to Norwich Union direct insurance. They have exported all the interfaces with clients to nice Indian ladies who 1) can't understand you 2) are kept in the dark by their colleagues in England - who of course won't talk to you. You have to go through the Indian ladies, who know nothing. they are like earthly representatives for Norwich Union proper. This has led to a lot of phone calls and a lot of grief in respect of a simple problem with an insurance which I paid £1500 for (on a £2000 scooter I share with my son). Never again. What they fail to grasp is that I have £100k invested in another part of Norwich Union (as a pension) and am actively looking round for some other arrangement. I can't trust them. And I will tell every member of my union in the same position to do the same.

I once had an accident in my car - a van ran into the back of a stationary queue of traffic and wrote off three cars. Norwich Onion were the insurer of both me and the van that caused the accident. At renewal time I found my premium had doubled even though the NCD was unaffected. I phoned up as a new customer, gave the same details (including declaring the accident & result) and got a quote that was the same as I'd had the previous year. Needless to say, I went elsewhere.

Regards

Richard.

Re: My own pet hate...118 etc

May I use this thread to get something off my chest. I HATE, every time I ask for a number from directory inquiries, being asked if they want to be put through at only £15 a minute or whatever. No I just want the bl00dy number, that is what I asked for, that is what I want.

Ahh. That feels better. A problem shared and all that.
