I am looking to purchase 60m of 8mm chain to replace the current 25m. We currently have a SL manual windlass but expect to change this for an electric one sometime in the future.

Please can anyone tell me, how different are the sprockets on the different makes of windlass and if I buy chain calibrated for SL, will it work ok on anothers electric windlass?

I understand that SL no longer manufacture, would I be better buying chain calibrated for an electric windlass make and then use it this year on the current windlass where it is perhaps less critical if it jumps?

Thanks for your help
Tony

Tony, in principle You should not experience any problem with calibrated 8mm chain, as long as the sproket is designed for a 8mm calibrated chain.
Problems might arise only on those measures (e.g.: 10mm) where two standards exists: in these cases the sensible thing is to bring the sproket where you buy the chain in order to test the fit.
Again, 8m ISO DIN calibrated chain is always the same product.

Like gianenrico said, 8mm comes in one standard but 10mm for example comes in two (DIN766/A and EN818-3). Best thing to be sure would be to check what standard your current gypsy is and then check if the windlass you want in the future offers a gypsy of the same standard. With 8mm I think there's only one standard anyways so as long as you buy calibrated you should be OK.
