Was in Calais today admittedly by car and Chunnel and was amazed to only see five yachts on the visitors' pontoons but then I noticed that they have completely replaced the old pontoons in the 'cut-out' and have marina-ised the whole far end of the yacht basin creating numerous extra berths. Really substantial stuff by the look of it rather than the short fingers they used to have. Was going to avoid it next week but I think we might now give it a go.

Yes, some big improvements, thanks to a windfall of Eurodosh. (Nice to know some of our taxes go to good purpose). But still expect to raft out three deep on the visitors berths at weekends. And cheapskates can no longer lie against the wall. Electricity is now provided, but has been very unreliable both times I've visited this season. There has been some dredging outside, so more of the waiting moorings can be reached at low tide. A major improvement is the new lock gate. This means you can enter the marina on 5 openings every tide, day and night, the first being two hours before high water and the last variable but around 1 3/4 hours after.

Because of the volume of ferry traffic, it is essential to call on VHF ch 12 for permission to enter and exit Calais.

Re: Cheapskates

Sailing single or short handed on a tight budget doesn’t necessarily make you a cheapskate!
