We are sailing tomorrow to Cadiz Bay for a day or so on our way to Gib. and would like some advice on which of the several marinas we should choose. I remember from the 1970s that the Cadiz marina is a very long walk just to get out of the port complex. Is Rota a good choice? We would like basic food shops, a pleasant town/village (not a British enclave built of concrete), electricity and water on the berth. And not too expensive /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif We will be leaving early in the morning, so any replies by then, please. Many thanks.

Rota! Perfect for your needs, lovely little town, basic and more food shops. When I did that trip regular, always stopped there.

Hi Steve,

Totally agree! Puerto de Santa Maria is a great little place, with a wonderful older part and a smallish but great covered market.

If available when you're there, you can also get free tours of the sherry bodegas with samples, not that anything like that would interest Lemain of course!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

This little place is a 'not to be missed' for us when we're down that way, especially as the berthing charges include use of all the Yacht Club facilities e.g. swimming pool, tennis courts etc. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks, guys. That's where we will aim for, then. According to Reeds it is best to book and I have tried to phone but, I am ashamed to confess, I don't speak Spanish yet and was not able to communicate. I've emailed using winlink and hope someone will act on it. Sounds really nice and Mrs Lemain gets very funny when she's had too much product from Jerez /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Thoroughly agree with all other responses. However, we are berthed in Puerto Sherry and intend to stay for another year as it is fine for us. It appears to have a poor reputation from previous years. But we stumbled across it a year ago and can only report that the marina staff speak excellent english and are very helpful. There are 3 good chandlers and extensive repair facilities. The toilets and showers are cleaned every day. Security is very visual. It's a fair way from the town a 30 minute walk or taxi's are readily available. But best of all it is very inexpensive . We have a 13.5m motor cruiser which costs us £2600 per year including water and electricity - compare that to the Med where we gladly escaped from. Must say though, Puerto Sherry is much busier now than a year ago but always seems able to accomodate visitors. Good stop off point for you. Any further info, happily supplied.

Seem to remember the fishing fleet leaving Santa Maria at approx. 4a.m. each morning!
The Junta run marinas are fine and offer good value. We intended to be in Cadiz Bay for a couple of nights, but were held there by bad weather for the best part of two weeks. Still that meant lots of time to visit Jerez, Cadiz and Seville, all well worth the train or ferry trip.

Rio Guardiana

Can anyone advise or direct me to an information source for the latest pilot info on the Guardiana. We propose to travel to Alcouhim up river, but can find no current info. Thanks in advance.
