Hello,

The cabin sole in our forepeak has always been a different finish to the cabin sole throughout the rest of our yacht. This winter I'd like to rectify that by adding a wood veneer on top of the wooden sole that's already in situ. I don't want to use a synthetic alternative nor do I want to attempt to construct the sole from scratch. I realise that matching the original will be impossible, however I'd like to get as close as possible. The original is pictured below:

I've been searching online and have found one UK company that appear to be able to provide a pre-fabricated sheet - Robbins [ http://www.robbins.co.uk/marine/cabin_cockpit.asp ]. As I would like to review all of the options specifically to get the closest design & colour match, does anyone know of alternatives (manufacturers/suppliers of a pre-fabricated wood solution)?

So to recap; a wood veneer pre-fabricated solution, not synthetic, not hand-crafted from the component parts (that's beyond me).

Many thanks in advance : )

So to be clear; a wood veneer pre-fabricated solution, not synthetic, not hand-crafted from the component parts (that's beyond me).

Here is a source of a board with black rubber strip inlay:http://www.bruynzeelmultipanel.com/products/search/cid/3?lang=en

All the answers seem to point to sole boards but (as the thread title indicates) the OP is looking for VENEER

" I'd like to rectify that by adding a wood veneer on top of the wooden sole that's already in situ. "

AFAIK, the material with black inlay from Robbins is a rubber inlay really intended for exterior decking, and very expensive.
My old SHE31 had similar to yours in the cabin, the black line wasn't a timber inlay though, but stained or painted on then finished. Lasted 40+ years.
(I'm not referring to Shedeck!)
Perhaps it wouldn't be too difficult to do this by masking, after first veneering your existing sole if needed, try experimenting.
I note that you seek a ready-made veneer, but I'm doubtful that you will find one.

in that case: get some veneer posted to you and as OP says try a DIY approach to the lines. When the thixotropic veneer glue has set (or whatever is now recomended by way of fixative), apply a zillion coats of varnish, matt if desired. You can mask off lines with some really high quality masking tape, suggest google 3M products! Otherwise you will have frizzy lines, especially if any veneer grain allows black paint seepage.A better suggestion might be to use architects black finepoint pen .05mm diameter and with an accurate tee -square to build up your lines that way. I am presuming that the original photo is of the main cabin sole and not the forepeak.I think this is clear, just checking?
Personally I would not go down this troublesome route, but if you do, please post a photo on here to show your success!
Better to phone a few boatyards and see of anybody has an offcut. Or walk the beaches lookingfor flotsam! (haha!)
The cost of a full sheet which you say you do not need would be Stg 140 to 170 and you would have carriage costs.
The veneer cost is such that you could order an oversupply and make chessboards/Cheeseboards as Xmas presents with a less expensive backboard. (another attempt to lighten the atmosphere!)
Another mad idea that might work is to glue some engineered floorboards together, cut to shape and proceed with the lines as desired.

Plenty of coats of paint on the underside and a reinforcing sheet of plain WBp marine ply to stiffen would make a durable board, stained to exactly match existing sole.Cheap approach!
best of luck with the project. p.s. I did an entire 30' boat from 1 sheet of striped Bruynzeel ply,P.M. me if details of the cutting needed, there are tricks.

Thanks very much for the replies. The interesting thing is that it seems as though I won't find what I'm looking for as it doesn't appear to exist. I had imagined that there would be something like that, as one of the steps onboard is plywood with a veneer stuck on top, however that could have been sourced in the Netherlands thirty years ago. I thought that I might just have been searching in the wrong places using the wrong terminology.

Boo2: thanks for the link to Kayospruce. That looks like a reasonable match, but as you say it's not cheap.

theoldsalt: thanks for the link to Bruynzeel. As with the Kayospruce it looks a reasonable match and I'd imagine that the costs will be similar, but I'll explore this.

earlybird: that could be a good solution in terms of trying to get a close match, so I might experiment with that. Thank you.

paulclan: Thanks for both of your contributions. Lots of ideas there to consider. If I go down the route of drawing lines I promise to come back here and post a picture.

Thanks again to all. Your thoughts are very much appreciated. I can now stop searching for the veneer solution as it doesn't seem to exist.
