You need a special flooring varnish which produces a hard and durable surface, but my boat had a two part epoxy varnish applied, then a gloss floor varnish put on top (several coats). It has lasted very well and I have not had to re-coat it in my ownership.
Amazingly the best floor varnish I have found for domestic use is a water based Dulux product. Bought from a specialist paint supplier, and very expensive it, lasts well and looks good in bathrooms and kitchens, so I see no reason why it should not be just as good in a boat. The one I used is semi matt finish, but I think it is also available as a gloss.

I bought some yachting varnish recently oil based which I plan to use on a toe rail. I'm also planning to add a little sand and use on the cabin floor and hope this provides a nice but slip free surface to walk on.

I have just completed this task through the winter using Ronseal Diamond Hard Varnish (satin). This stuff is not specifically for boats but was recommended on this forum some while ago. I brought all the floor panels into the house so the quick drying varnish went off very quickly and enabled several coats in a day. I can't comment on the wearability (yet) but the result looks good. I sanded down gently between each of the last two coats.

Sounds good, I,ll try that, thanks, ('nother Morgan) Bill.

I have used Rylard varnish and am in the fourth year with no trouble at all yet with two small kids doing their best to ruin it!!!

I looked at a product called COELAN one of the boat shows - on one of the timber stands (I think KJ Howells, or Robbins etc.?) Though quite expensive, they insisted it was the toughest coating for wood bar none, and suitable for floor covering - they have "sand" that you sprinke on it while wet (although I suspect you would have to be carefull to do this lightly and evenly).
