C-Map reduced prices ??

Asked a couple of months ago about buying a C-Map NT+ . It was suggested I wait as there would be price reductions and special offers in Feb/March.

I'm looking for Bristol Channel cartridge to fit Navman 5500

Anybody know where these offers are available - I can't find any ?

I have a standard+ cartridge and I asked C-MAP about correction dates. They are discontinuing the standard+ and increasing the coverage of Wide+ to be similar to the old Super Wide+. So my "upgrade path" has now gone from a £27+VAT standard+ update to a "standard+ to wide+ upgrade" at £97+VAT !

Yes, the price of a Wide+ cartridge may be lower than it was before and it may contain charts from a wider area, but I don't need that coverage. I was happy with my standard+ coverage!

Oh well, thats progress...

I've been in touch with C-Maps and JG Technologies who are both now only offering the new editions. The Standard+ at £99 has now been withdrawn and replaced with 'extra wide' at £139 + vat ; ouch!


Think I've lost out as the standard+ covers the area I need - Bristol channel and S Irish sea. The extra wide covers the whole of the Irish sea.

Perhaps selling agents are being well credited on returning ' old? ' stock.

Hope I'm wrong and info appreciated. Leon, any chance of phoning the MD?

I have a 2005 C-MAP brochure which quotes:
- new MEGA WIDE £209+vat
- new WIDE (almost same coverage as last seasons SuperWide) - £138+VAT
- LOCAL £69+vat

However, I was looking @ Kelvin Hughes website & brochure and these new prices downt seem to appear.

I started a thread recently to see if it is a viable option to use A3/A2 print output from electronic charts (laminated of course) as the sole means of navigation on board (no pc or plotter on board). I didnt really get a definitive answer - do you C-MAP users think this is possible (ie. are lat+long grids there etc.) Do any of you do this?

C-Map MAX cartridges will only work with MAX equipped units, so beware confusing the NT+ and NT MAX pricing and hardware!

I would highly recommend NOT using printouts of C-Map charts as your sole means of navigation onboard. I have found C-Map NT+ charts to be sorely lacking in important data content. Furthermore, a print copy of a C-Map chart will not identify names and charcteristics of buoys and lighthouses as you have to "click" on these types of items and examine a menu of data boxes to find all the information that is availble on conventional charts. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

you are quite right - I called around the suppliers and have found this same information. Raster based charts such as ARCS from the UKHO should work , as they are scans of originals although the Maptech software doesnt have the ability to print lat & long marks etc.

I've given up on the idea, and posted on the thread I started to ask about this - seems like the electronic chart suppliers are missing an opportunity here. Im sure there must be other boat owners who would like the flexibility of printing *usable* charts to cover selected areas rather than buying large unweildy things of which they only need part.

Maptech Chart Navigator, the freebie with Maptech charts allows you to print at just one scale but will print any marks you place on the chart beforehand. Thus you could place marks at major lat/lon grid intersections and interpolate from there.

MaxSea can print charts close to the scale you have selected for the screen display and a display of a lat/lon grid in your own choice of colour can be selected prior to printing. However, MaxSea is expensive, there may well be a cheaper alternative. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Regarding the disgraceful new pricing structure from C-Map, if you want to update an "old" standard cartridge you can make an "exchange" for a new "wide" at a cost of £113.98 inc VAT. You are no longer allowed to update an old standard cartridge. There would seem to be little doubt that C-Map believe that sufficient of us have bought dedicated plotters that we are now a captive audience who can be gouged by aggressive price tactics. It is true that you get coverage of a much bigger area with this new price structure but that is not much help if you do not plan to go there.

Given the attitude to such matters by the UK competition authorities, I would what response we might get from the Office of Fair Trading if a complaint was put to them by PBO and the RYA?

In the meantime try looking on the internet for prices charged in the USA for the same product!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Any old cartridges / stocks on 2nd hand market ?

As many might consider .... 2nd hand use ?? Many people use old charts and get away with it, so what about electronic ?

Not being a CMap NT user - I only post this as a thought. Is there any problem transferring a licence with original card / cd ? As in EU I am told that this is fully allowed as long as no copy is left with seller, and all relative bist are passed to buyer. Is the key dependent on which pc - as in Maptech ?
