HI
I am looking at buying a Standard Horizon CP-300i plotter and have been looking for one bundled with the UK wide charts but can only find these plotters bundled with the very wide area charts from Greenland down to the Azores. There is good discount for getting the chart at the same time and I could request the retailer supply the chart just covering the UK but is there substantial difference between the format, features etc of these two chart packs? Also are there differences between the local area charts and the wide and extra wide chart packs?

Catalac08,

I have the Standard Horizon CP300i which I bought with the same chart you have been offered.

It gives me all the detail I need on all aspects of navigation even fine detail on rivers and estuaries, including tidal streams.

I am very pleased with it.

I don't think there is any difference in the level of details between local and the latest XXW charts. It's just that they are in a sort of arms-race with Navionics that make them offer more chart for less money. I used to have two cartridges, a XXW and a smaller one. The area they covered both looked identical to me.
Also bear in mind that you can change the area as well when you upgrade the cartridge. So you can move to different area, but you can also upgrade from Wide to XXW at a reduced price. Still quite expensive compared to the charts on an iPad though....
