can anyone recommend a card reader for my c-map NT+ super wide to plug into my PC and laptop. Prefer USB.
It does not fit my current generic multi card reader for my camera, or the multi slots on my Epson printer all-in-one thingy, so I am a bit confused! Could go and act stupid down at PC World, but I ahave had enough of sneering teen heroes this week.
Presume this will function with Sea Clear?

Thanks all.
PS Why doesn't the search bring up anything of note? Can't believe the question is unique.

Take it down PC world - but make sure it is a duff cartridge - I'd love to see them have a go! They probably won't know what a C-Map cartridge is ... let alone what it will plug into ...

If you have a look at the C-map website and also MES website (www.mesltd.co.uk) they have C-map card readers with two slots for use with USB port on PCs (you need to specify for USB port as there is also a serial port version). I assume they will work with C-Map NT+ but you should make sure first. I think MES still have a special offer of chart software plus the reader for £180.00, if I remember correctly.

Here is the MES site info : http://www.mesltd.co.uk/Products/system/index.htm

I think you will find that C-Map have a "closed shop" on who can sell a C-Map cartridge reader. ie you will have to buy the reader direct from C-Map or one of their dealers. All prices are fixed by C-Map so not a lot of point in looking for a good deal.

It's a bugger, isn't it? /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Last year I bought a PC Planner kit that allowed me to plan our routes on a PC prior to actually setting off. It consisted of a double card reader with cable that fitted into the uSB port of my laptop. The reader acts as a dongle, and allows the PC to read the chart. There is also a CD which has the basic world map on it, as well as other things. It is very handy, as you can transfer data from PC to plotter. I bought mine from SeaTeach in Emsworth, but any swindlery will probably get one. I can't now remember the cost. You can buy blank cartridges and copy charts onto them, so you can have one at home and one on board.

Come on Becky,
did you bang your head on the way into the swindlery?? Can't remember how much? Perhaps you passed out when told the price, or you don't want to tell 'im indoors how much. Pah! Facts, facts, thats what we are needing round here.
This dongle thing sounds worth investigating though.

Fraid the news is not good... I have one of the aforementioned PC Planner jobs. Bought recently from mailspeed. It holds 2 NT+ cards and allows you to read the charts on your PC. Plugs into the USB Port. It comes with the C-MAP PC planner software which is a useful home tool for planning your next trip. Have a look here

Seems to work well price to me was £139

you can also get some software called "Software On Board" from
here

which is free and which will turn your PC into a plotter using the charts from the USB reader and a GPS dongle.

See http://www.c-map.co.uk/leisure_boats.html and click on PC Planner. It is excellent, we use it for planning at home and transferring WPTs and routes to the on board plotters via the C-Map user cartridges. Aside from your own cartidges once one of these is loaded it displays quite detailed world-wide background charts, big enough to view major buoyed channels for example from off Iraq to New York or wherever curiosity takes you.

What it cannot do I'm afraid is allow you to copy charts onto a blank cartridge (I Wish!) but it will allow you to print screen shots. I have used mine to print off and later laminate screenshot chartlets of channels like Chenal Du Four for use in the cockpit.

The cost is £125 +VAT which includes the PC software, we have the USB version but a serial port one is also available. I got ours at a special 50% off price from MES Ltd as part of another purchase, I'm sure they will discount the plotter on it's own a bit if you ask nicely....

As others have said a normal card reader will not read a C-Map cartridge. What you need is the C-Map card reader. If you do not have a supported navigation package such as Raymarine Raytech or Maxsea you will need the PC Planner software as well. You can purchase the C-Map PC Planner kit online from http://www.marinercomputers.co.uk/acatalog/PC_Planner.html for £140 inc.vat.
Last time I looked Seaclear did not support C-Map charts, however this may have changed now but it would be worth checking.
