Are these charts detailed enough for accurate navigation close inland in tricky channels, particularly on the west coast of Scotland?

Oh yes West Scotland, /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gifsorry didn't see that first time. Mine is the Channel.

I can still send you a few zoom levels if you wish.

Cheers

Just remember
(a) check you have the right GPS base - OSGB vs WGS84 etc
(b) some of the base surveys date back for possibly a hundred years or more

So useful as backup but don't rely entirely - mark one eyeball applies

I havent checked mine all over, it covers much of atlantic europe but I have at least been able to identify my marina beth in the two I have been into since purchasing the chart package.

I'm pretty sure that they will include the largest scale chart available for anywhere. I think you can actually see the hundreds of included charts on the web site if you drill down far enough.

Yes you can. I have several and although you need with all electronic charts to ensure they are up to date, they are certainly detailed enough for as close inshore as I ever want to go. They are also detailed enough for close inland too. Mine even tells me where the nearest post office is! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

better to use eyes and pilot book you dont have time to keep staring at the screen, have same probs around lorne, work out pilotage before hand ,easier to look at large scale map with glance, tides and currents too tricky to take eyes off, usually good few charter boats come to grief this way up here every year hitting submerged rocks etc, same places to

Sailed for several years on West Coast, latterly with a C-map plotter. As far as I could tell, it showed every feature that was on the Admiralty charts - even down to the smallest scale. Certainly I used chart based pilotage for the tricky channels but it was interesting to see the comparison with the plotter which was set up under the sprayhood. In Cuan Sound, it showed the position of the boat on top of Cleit rock although we were about 10m away at the time - guess that's just about the accuracy level of GPS based plotting!

Yes, I agree, having sailed for several years all over the West Coast. Only thing is, as I get older I'm getting to be a sucker for all the nice toys I can buy. I see you are familiar with the works of the one and only Bud Neill.
