C&J Marine sales - don\'t give them your email address :(

C&J Marine sales have sent out a huge mailing list with all the recipients in the 'To' field, so you can see all of their customers' names and email addresses, along with a 500kB attachment. That means that if ANY of those people gets a virus on their machine - our email addresses are going to end up with the spammers /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I want to return this to C&J in the most appropriate manner possible....any suggestions /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Reply to the email with the "reply to all" button in your email client. All the people in the list will get it, and will be aware of C&J's lack of concern for people's privacy.

Keep the email as evidence, then fill out the complaint form here

and dump them into a great deall of poo under the data protection act.

I dont understand how data protection can come into a list of e mail addresses when you can pick up a phone book with tens of thousands of addresses in it.

Its all a load of boll**cks really - we are getting data protection totally out of proportion IMHO. Even the govt's fabled 2 million loss only included data which you freely and routinely give away or was useless.

[/ QUOTE ]I was wondering about that. While the addresses per se don't appear to be very 'private' they become private by association - if a firm publishes its customer list it cause very real embarrassment to individuals.

In any case, the DPP is about duty of care of data and this is a perfect example of blatant lack of care. These people should be hauled over the coals - they are big enough to have sent an employee on a specific course (when I employed only two people I went on a DPP course for due diligence).

A genuine, sincere, apology from the owner of the business and an explanation of how they have prevented it from happening again would go a long way to mitigating the complaint. Oh, and I want to know why it is that they will NOT unsubscribe me.

Meanwhile, all, I suggest you get your fabrics from someone else.

Re: C&J Marine sales - don\'t give them your email address :(

If they will not unsubscribe you, that is also a cause for complaint to the same organisation.

Re: C&J Marine sales - don\'t give them your email address :(

C&J are a really nice bunch. I am sure that they did not realise what they were actually doing. Yes they should know the correct way using the BCC, but it is not obvious to someone, unless pointed out to them.

I will call them tomorrow, and tell them.

Re: C&J Marine sales - don\'t give them your email address :(

I'm also on their list and by coincidence I am going into see them tomorrow about a new cockpit hood and stack pack.
Do you think they'll offer me much discount?? /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: C&J Marine sales - don\'t give them your email address :(

I got the same Email, replied suggesting they reviewed their practices and then deleted the whole thing.

It then occured to me their contact list has some value to their competitors.

Suggest you pass on their contacts list to TECSEW and any other competitors you can think off.

I am sure that would make them more careful with our data the in future.

Re: C&J Marine sales - don\'t give them your email address :(

If you want your email address sent to every other person on each supplier you sent your email too, then feel free to be smug. Personally, I'd rather my details were kept private, and there are laws in place to ensure privacy.

Re: C&J Marine sales - don\'t give them your email address :(

Indeed. Some of the email addresses are particularly private - things like:- bjasmith@bjasmith.co.uk Obviously I made that up to preserve privacy, but there are quite a few examples of that ilk on their mailing list.

Re: C&J Marine sales - don\'t give them your email address :(

A very well known saiing/outdoor/recreation firm did the same to me many years ago. I sent them a friendly e mail pointing out the errors of their ways and a very nice lady contacted me apologised and sent me a fleece as a sorry gesture. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Apology

C&J Marine Ltd unreservedly apologise for the error that has recently been made during the distribution of our Winter Newsletter by e-mail.

We would like to assure all of our valued customers that this error was not intentional and is totally unacceptable.

We also understand and appreciate the concerns that some of our customers have, and would like to reassure you that steps have now been taken to make certain that this will not happen again.

We would also like to take this opportunity of thanking our customers for your understanding whilst we are amending our error.

Why am I worried about both the "first posts"? ....

[/ QUOTE ]If you mean my 'first post', don't know - why are you "worried"?

Re: C&J Marine sales - don\'t give them your email address :(

I think he might be referring to BJASmith ... with a response of "Oi!!!"

Re: C&J Marine sales - don\'t give them your email address :(

Presumably you are going to tell us:-

1. What steps you have taken and how this came about?
2. In what ways you are amending your error?
3. And assure us that you have an immediate and effective means of removing our names from your mailing list, and tell us how to do it so that we don't then get another email from you again, unless we contact you again and request it.
