I have had my boat for 11 years & every year I have had a devil of a job getting the CAV filter to stop leaking
On one thread on this forum i was referred to as a spanner monkey & to be honest i felt like one
I had even tried several makes of filter because on putting a gauge on them I found the diameters of the seat vary by up to 1.8mm

Recently I was having discussions with a farmer ( he has several tractors etc with these filters & has no leaks) & explained my problem
He asked if it said CAV on the top. I said no & he told me that I probably had a clone & to get a genuine one ( now Delphi)
Upshot is that I fitted it & hurrah !!! no leak first time
I also noted that the fuel line nipples were a different thread so the old one was almost certainly a clone

So problem solved !!!

My new boat has a CAV system (the Vega had a Racor). Just splashed out on a ten pack of Delphi filters at £15, should last me a while! Glad that I have not wasted my money...

CAV filters were ideal in their day as whatever you bought fitted and did not leak.
Part of the problem in stopping leaks (in my opinion) is that the rubber sealing rings which come with filters are slightly too small. The secondary filter on my engine at the bottom has the original CAV part and it leaked, my way of stopping the leak was to put 2 rubber sealing rings in. But had I had original rubber rings I would never had been able to put 2 in.
And without naming a particular supplier, (as they provide an excellent service) I bought 2 complete (copy) CAV filters and when you look at the casting and compare it with an original CAV casting the original one is far superior.
In fact the boat I have just bought had been fitted with a new "copy" CAV filter and they had stripped the thread, which is not difficult as the casting is not as strong or dense as an original CAV one. That and they had bought a Metric head and the Unions were BSP.

My CAV filter leaked and I eventually removed it and discovered it had TWO 'O' rings where the top of the filter goes in the top casting. When removed and cleaned up, no further problems(apart from where the filter is located - it's a job for contortionist) But I'm still considering converting to a CAV screw-on filter which will make it a lot easier; you can get them from a well known internet auction site.
