Just had a look at the BYM site - won't be bothering again, it's awful - full of people from overseas, talking about sunny climes (apologies to Nigel Luther- present company excepted)! So I'll not be joining Steve 101 over there.

He's still having a pop at Scuttlebutt for his banishment - I think that in spite the bravado, it hit him pretty hard. Just don't know what drove him to the cliff edge, like a lemming........

What\'s the point

in knocking other people just for the sake of it. Even if they do come "from overseas"? Kind of lowers the tone of this forum, doesn't it?

Re: What\'s the point

Not at all: but when they are posting from Florida and St Kitts, the comment was made purely out of jealousy as I sit here in F8 gales - it had nothing to do with "foreigners" per se. However, I did find the forum tedious - stop trying to make something out of nothing.

Bit like a 5th form common room really, only duller. Gives me the impression of naughty boys peeking from a window, making farting noises and then rushing out of view - dead funny. Threads are almost exclusively about this forum, apart from tedious ones from the bod in charge asking for technical web advice - so there's little reward in going. Website design makes me a bit queezy too. All this, IMHO, since it takes all sorts etc etc

Pots and kettles

it might occur to you that the very thing you are saying does apply to yourself ??

The note that postings overthere are "almost exclusively" about this forum is one of the most conceited and ridiculous things I've ever read overhere.
Sorry , you are not that important to devote much time , apart from the fact that we do like to have a laugh at you from time to time , whenever we're not laughing at ourselves . why not do the same , it's never too late ...

you would be surprised how many people post on both , so whenever bashing one , you are bound to be bashing your our little corner as well. as has been said already too many times , both have their place.

BYM consists of a fairly small group of people many of whom were regulars from Scuttlebutt several years ago, but who found a new place to meet when this board went down for a month in 2001, and have found it worth keeping the alternative going. Several met when Scuttlebutt organised a couple of meets back in 2000, the most successful being in Poole with a visit to the RNLI centre there, which several IPC staff attended. (BYM still organises occasional meets). Others have joined after being the subject of abuse here, but many still post here occasionally.

If you stay here long enough eventually you will find that the flow of new ideas is just so much. How many times can you contribute to a thread seeking advice on anchoring or ensigns? But people get friendly and still wish to talk about things that interest them, which is why BYM tends to meander. Its history makes it seem very cliquey with lots of in-jokes, though I know they do welcome newcomers. It may be better to try a post rather than lurk.

Re: Pots and kettles

Agreed, and yes, it did occur to me before posting! And, as I implied, both have their place. Taking your point about 'member crossover', I wonder if the argument about "we" and "you" isn't a bit circular?

No wish to squabble. Opinions, even contrary ones, are allowed aren't they? Well, they are here.

Fascinated...

...by the motive for your post nicho! If you have a look at the Cruising World forum, you will also find it full of people who sail in sunnier climes than ours...

It is an unfortunate (for us!!) fact, that we have a cold wet and unpleasant climate...all bar the statutory 3 days of summer...usually a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in late August.

I think you are perhaps overstating the importance that Steve101 placed on his ability to post on SB...sure the guy is presently a bit miffed at having been banned, but I would say that he was more than half expecting it, and I reckon that he will soon get over it...still, that will remain his problem I guess!

Irrespective of your decision not to come back and lurf on the BYM site, none of us will hold it against you! All yachting sites have their own niche (even PBO /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif) and I for one would hate to confine my browsing to just one site. Most of the regulars at BYM enjoy the diversity that many sites bring rather than the insular attitude you seem to be inciting!!

Re: Fascinated...

i have recently failed to get near the bym site, which of course is due to my own dimness at not being able to register (if that's what you do) and so am still confined to being a remote lurfer (presumable lurker who also loafs?)

Meanwhile ...what's the etymology of "Endymion" - is this a mythical creature of which I should know?

I used to have a niche on PBO, and cured it with some filler and hung a picture over it.

You are going to regret this tcm!!!

I have the ability to kill ANY thread stone dead when that question is asked, so I will try and make it brief.

My paternal grandfather was a deep sea Captain, and believe it or not, actually obtained his masters ticket at the age of 13 for coastal trading. His last command was a luxury yacht by the name of 'Endymion', the owner had given my grandfather carte blanche to run the vessel as he saw fit, with the owner picking up the bills. My grandfather cared for the boat as if she was his own, and he always said that he felt 'Endymion' looked after him. I never met the old boy, my mum was expecting me when he passed away. On his death bed, he said to my dad "If it is a boy, make sure that you get him on the water"...that was 46 years ago, and I have been sailing for 42 of them!!

As mark of respect for my grandfather, we named our Cobra 850 'Endymion of Colne' (she is pt 1 registered, and 'Endymion' was already taken!)...and preferring an element of anonymity whilst on line decided to use 'Endymion' as my screen name.

So, where does 'Endymion' come from...the John Keats epic!

A THING of beauty is a joy for ever:
Its loveliness increases; it will never
Pass into nothingness; but still will keep
A bower quiet for us, and a sleep

Those are just the first 4 lines of a 900+ line piece of poetry!!

A lurfer is a web surfer who lurks and does not post...so I have been informed!

Have to agree with your way of covering the PBO niche/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif wallpaper works quite well!!

You are not going to regret this Endy !!!!

in fact , what Endy wanted to say , but he's far to shy and humble to tell :

Who was Endymion? In Greek mythology, he was the most handsome of men, the god of eternal youth and fertility. Some versions describe him as king, others as a shepherd. The moon goddess Selene was so smitten with Endymion's beauty that she put him into a perpetual sleep so that she could kiss him whenever she wished.

http://www.endymion.org/

it's of course the fertility bit that makes him immensely popular Chez Marian's

Well Steve...

...someone had to take on the role after you threw the toys out of the pram!!

Yes, that is the one failing that the Greeks have, their pro US of E attitude...but that apart, I still reckon as a nation they have the right approach to life!!

Yep, you\'re right there....

.. if you can get away with obtaining an EU grant for 33-50% of the cost of a building, only building that proportion, stopping when the "free" money runs out and then occupying it (& because it isn't finished you don't attract any local taxes either) then YES that might be an approach to life that some might find attractive.

Now their PHILOSOPHY of life? Well yes. We're off in ten days for 14 days of spray warmer than the air it flies through. Sad though that the Euro has caused all the trouble it has in Greece. Instant inflation.
