BVI\'s Antigua

Anybody had experience of boat owner ship in BVI (Tortola) or Antigua. Fancy buying out there but wondered about moorings, Nelsons dockyard or Pussers Landing?

Re: BVI\'s Antigua

I've not owned, but been a few times. Antigua has a significant barnacle problem to the extent that an entire boat is covered within three months. Most long-term antiguan boats are hoiked out of the water using lifts installed on the pontoon. That said, it's all fairly cheap (45 foot for 27 US dollars for a single night) and i wd consider using Jolly Harbour with nice shoreside facilites incl pool, and ask Horizon yacht charter for a steer regarding guardiennage - i bet they'd do it for you. Dunno contacts in the BVI - less of a barnacle prob at least to the east of tortola. No direct flights either, i spose?

Chartered a mobo in the BVI's a few years ago and its certainly a fab cruising area. Cruising between the islands is well sheltered from the prevailing tradewinds although distances are relatively short so maybe better suited to sailing rather than motoring. There are many fine anchorages with laid moorings and the coral has been well protected so diving/snorkeling is v interesting. We also liked the BVI because the locals are friendly and there are'nt any no-go areas like on some other WI islands
I would have thought you should consider a mooring within an easy drive of the airport. Its a long enough journey to get to the BVI as it is
