Subject: Buying in Turkey

Dear All,

I am presently considering buying a vessel (second hand) in Turkey.

I wish to know if there are any known pitfalls or subjects I should consider re VAT and export from Turkey and import charges into Europe. The final destantaion being the UK.

The vessel is at present under Turkish Flag unto which I would obviously change to British.

Any information or tips on the above topics would be most helpful.

Thanks and best regards

Depends whether your second hand boat is VAT rateable. Is the price quotted net or with added VAT?
If the latter, you would have to pay on arrival unless:
1. the vessel is commercial (i.e. has a hold)
2. is over 25 tons
Got this from a VAT specialist/accountant.
Good luck!

If it has been registered in the past by an UE resident and has had Vat paid on it and if you can get the proof you may be able to avoid paying it again.
A lot of if's

Somebody told me at LIBS that it is possible for the VAT-paid status of a boat to lapse if it has been out of the EU long enough so if the boat is advertised as VAT paid and you intend to bring it back into the EU, check with Customs before you bring it back

Seems unlikely to me that someone keeping a boat in Turkey would have paid VAT in an EU country. If they had I think they would have reclaimed it on moving the boat permanently outside the EU. Therefore you will have to pay VAT, unless you use one of the schemes to avoid VAT, but this always involves some compromises.
