EXCISE DUTIES
"I will implement from midnight on Sunday the normal annual inflation rise of 1 pence on a pint of beer, 4 pence on a bottle of wine but I will freeze duty on spirits, cider and sparkling wine. My decision on cigarettes is, for public health reasons, to go ahead with the annual inflation rise of 7 pence a packet from 6 o'clock this evening."

"I have today written to the European Commission proposing that the tax free limit on goods imported to the UK from outside the European Union should rise from 145 pounds to 1,000 pounds."

Not seen 'owt about red diesel though

Never noticed they C&E had a £145 ceiling - bought shoes staside for $68 and they still slapped import duty on them.

Up a creek....
well spotted, if only I'd had waited a week or two...just got stung for £78. ouch

Still cheaper than if I'd had bought the equipment in the UK.

I rather suspect that the GBP 145 exemption (raising to GBP1000) is for goods imported by a traveller returning to UK e.g. your shopping during your holiday. If you buy something from the US say via the internet then its all dutiable although they may not catch you.

Apologies if I'm pointing out the bleedin obvious!

The £145 limit only applies to goods which you personally carry into the country with you. I understood that this is the limit he is trying to raise to £1000 for all his supporters going to Disney in the USA on their Child Tax Credits.

The limit on goods imported by other means (post, courier etc) is only £18. I didn't hear him mention trying for increase in that limit.

Don't be in such a rush. If Labour win the next election that will be announced the day after as will many other new taxes. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Bugger, I've just paid £100 VAT on £700 of goods bought back from the US. Still at a £1000, it will be worth flying across to shop for goodies.

I don't how much motorway driving you do but have you seen how much european HGV traffic is entering our country and they are not paying a penny for the effect, damage, wear and tear on our roads.
I work in the distribution industry and when I am travelling about I am now starting to count the number of foreign HGV vehicles on our major roads and I think it's around 10%. there is no 10% levy to obtain redress of cost and there should be. Our roads are becoming disgraceful by being worn out and constantly under repair. 3 major roadworks currently south bound M5 and we are approaching Easter!
Regards.

Peter.
