Buying digital stuff in USA

There was a recent thread about buing electronics in USA which I cannot immediately find. I am planning on buying a GPS unit and, as a I hv a US dollar account, could easily forward dollar funds to the vendor,and save at the same time. I'd appreciate guidance from anyone having bought from the US, i.e. supplier, VAT payable, how, when etc. All notes appreciated. Tks

I bought a hand held Garmin 76CS when living in the US. The only issue that I found was that the pre loaded map base software was..... US! So the UK does not really exist as far as they are concerned. Fine when I lived there, but not much use, now I sail from the Orwell.

If I buy stuff there now, I still use my dollar account, but get it delivered to a friend's house and I pick up next time I am in the US.

If anyone knows how to get European base map software, please let me know!

You can buy them on Micro SD card, but RRP is 127 quid....

Thanks, I assumed that the 127 quid version was the dogs... and there was a more generic "base" version available. Obviously not. I guess that I will have to continue using those paper thingys with nice colours on.
