Please can you help me? I'm planning to buy a boat from Sunsail. It's already UK registered and vat has been paid. I want a number of friends and familiy to be able to use it so I think over the following 12 months I think I'll have to make them all part owners. Is this correct and if so, how do I do this? Any help you can give me would be really appreciated.

Put all names onto the SSR . they will all need to be named on insurance and all other documents including B.O.Sale. if you are using the boat in greece.
I think/

cheers bobt

There are two issues. The first is whether you want them to have any real ownership interest in the boat. If you do then you need to have some clear agreement on how this is structured. There are a number of ways of doing it and I suggest you read the RYA advice on partnership yachts.

The second is ensuring you don't have trouble with the Greek authorities. If your boat is over 10m you will need a cruising log (DEKPA) and this will show the boat's owner(s) as also shown on the registration document, so it makes sense to register the boat on the SSR with more than one owners name on it. This does not prove actual ownership. You could also provide a letter of authority to cover other people using your boat. The monitoring and stamping of DEKPAs is very hit and miss but it is good to be prepared to show it. in addition you will need insurance with a Greek translation, passports for everyone plus the Bill of Sale and VAT receipt, although there is rarely any interest in the last 2. An ICC for the skipper is also useful, although again rarely asked for.

BTW it is unusual for a charter boat to be British registered and for VAT to be paid if it is still in use as a charter boat. Most are on the Greek register as it is easier to get a charter licence and VAT only normally becomes payable when it comes off the charter register and is sold to a private person.
