They've really bit the dust so I need to invest. Jeez they're dear down here!!! All I've found so far is vetus sin maintenance really exepensive in Santa Cruz and Las Palmas. Going over to south Gran Canaria tomorrow for a look. Lots golf down here so some 6v golf cart would do the job but no idea where to ask.
So the 2 questions are -
does anyone know of a good supplier of deep cycle battaries in tenerife or gran canaria?
Anywhere where I could get 6v golf cart batteries and is this a viable option?

Good luck! We had a similar 'cardiac cost' shock when we cruised mainland Spain a few years ago. They wanted over £150 for an AC Delco 110 amp semi-leisure battery then which compared to around £60 odd in the UK.

As we were over-wintering, one of the Brit guys there very kindly brought six batteries back from the UK in his car for us, and other boats, following a visit home. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I understand things are a bit more equitable now, but as you've discovered, there's still a chunky difference. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
 
Is it chandlers you have been trying? You may be better off in a fereteria (ironmongers). They are generally much cheaper for everything and usually stock a lot of other stuff for boats too. You could also try any Hypermercado (supermarket), they often do cheapo batteries for cars that may be suitable, even in short term.

Go to a truck repair shop, the ones that do tractor type tyres and look run down and ask them about batteries you will find them significantly cheaper and they do do the job.
 
Whilst I've never tried in the Canaries, as a rule of thumb the area in/around yacht harbours and marinas is the most expensive place in any country to source a new battery. From my experience, you can save the cost of hiring a car for the day on the price of one battery sourced from an industrial/retail estate located elsewhere (ask the locals). So if you want/need just the one; you're getting a days free car hire and all subsequent batteries are a saving.
 
Right down near the fishing port in Santa Cruz, theres a fishing boat chandler (mostly big bits of fishing gear etc) but I seem to remember things like antifoul etc were cheaper there. SOmeone locally may be able to get more info for you.

I have bought mine in a ferreteria (ironmonger) before now (but not in Sta Cruz) - there is quite a large one by the Mercado (pinkish building) in Sta Cruz Tenerife (between marina and Carrefour). It is a shop just up from the roundabout and has a Mobil Lubricantes sign hanging on the wall.

Good luck. Hire car a good idea (or taxi of course) - took a 100AH batt on back of folding bike one time - corners were interesting /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
 
Hola Capn! How's Lanzarote? Never thought of trying a fereteria actually, I'll give it a go. They are my favorie shops /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif And thanks everyone else, never thought of what a good excuse it is to hire a car for a few days either. In Puerto Mogon now so not much here but a hopefully well stocked and helpful chandlers, I'll ask them in the morning what they know of battery life in Gran Canaria. The guy in the shop in Santa Cruz did say that vetus were increasing their battery prices month by month as world lead prices go up. And to anyone sailing from Tenerife to Gran Canaria in the wind accelleration zones - get yer oilies on! 50Kn gust earlir on, one way to loose your breakfast and get a clean boat at the same time. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Did the crossing last week, kept close to the coast from Pto Mogan, up to Agaete, anchored overnight (motor sailed from Pto Mogan). Most we saw was 28kts across deck, though awkward seas off the capes S of Agaete. It's a way of getting round the N of the acceleration zone. Good sail across to St Cruz de Tenerife though.
 
Think I caught it on a particularly boisterous day.

Pic shows how quickly wind gets up in the acc zones. Prob go back to Gomera from here so will have to bash through both of them again. Least it will be behind the beam then.
