Buying Ability

Following on from posts about Sea-Check and the interests of commercial bodies I feel people are trying to aquire experince/confidence /ability by purchasing the latest must have safety gizmo and now they can have the RNLI check the boat and issue a list of suggestions.
Armed with a completed list and latest purchases they now feel confident to set off.
I am concerned they will extend themselves too far believing the are now equiped to deal with all situations.
Whats the opinion of the team?

Good honest fear....

is the best life saving device known to me.

I suspect and indeed hope that you may be wrong, because people buying these devices are showing a healthy level of fear, and I doubt if owning the gadgets cures that - only experience will do so, surely?

But, having said all that, we passed a pretty capable looking big boat being towed in by the lifeboat yesterday, with nothing very evidently wrong with her that one could see at 200 yards....

Re: 2 of everything

Not sure about having the very latest. However, other than having training, experience and so on, preparation is made easier with more loot thrown at the problem. Or a lot more loot.

Not sure where to site a fire extinguisher? Have some more, and site them all over the place: assume half won't work. Likewise, throwing devices are often flung out in total panic by the wrong person in the wrong direction, so get more of those. Same thing with flares. We've all gottem, but if you really really needed them, whatwould be better than a box of flares? two boxes of flares! Waterproof vhf's are very good. How about one each, clipped in a jacket? Unlesss they're unconcious, they could see you and radio in if ever overboard.

agree with mirelle that good honest fear is good. Specially if shared around!

Now you mention it

I took Tom Cunliffe's advice and kept the out of date set of flares as well....so I am guilty of two of that.

Re: Now you mention it

I'm definitely of the kitchen sink variety but whether I could find most of the stuff in a crisis is another question. Sometimes I know I've got just the right thingummy but I end up buying a new one because I don't know where the old one is!

So the solution seems to be, buy 2 boats, tow one behind the other then when something breaks you've got the solution.
i think not EXPERIENCE,lots of sea miles, then set forth.

I have two sons. One fell overboard yesterday. As I fished him out, I reminded him that we have a spare.....he has been more careful since!

Re: Good honest fear....

I agree
I do feel there will always be people who will set out to sea when others would not.

years ago i went out on a week flot and a week club with some friends. I had no formal quals other than day skipper theory and lots of crewing. Took some friends on the flot. Did a refresher course for a day at the club with one of the group who had sailed a few times and was doing the dayskip theory

After a few days had more skippers than required but otherwise enjoyed trip. The one guy who had never sailed before went on a bareboat in indonesia the next year. He didn't say how it went. he came back alive but has not been again

Before anyone blames the charter co. he was very convincing that he has more experience than he has. the final straw for me was that i overheard him saying to another boat that he had brought me on flot and he was skipper

My point is I would never have gone straight to bareboat with one trip and only my girlfriend as crew. She had limited idea how to handle the boat or what to do if he get swept off or knocked off. Some people sail beyond their limits cos they have no idea what those limits are.
